Forest fires in 84 different locations across Türkiye: Interventions continue

On July 26th, forest fires broke out simultaneously in 84 different locations across Turkey due to the effects of a heat wave, low humidity, and wind. A rapid and effective response was carried out with the participation of numerous institutions under the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the majority of the fires were brought under control. In addition to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, teams from the Ministries of Interior, National Defense, Transport and Infrastructure, and Health also worked in the affected areas. The General Directorate of Forestry, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency), Gendarmerie, Security, 112 Emergency Health, and local government teams were on the ground in full coordination. All efforts, from evacuations and health interventions to road clearance and logistical support activities, were carried out simultaneously to ensure the safety of citizens.

Türkiye's firefighting capacity has been strengthened by investments made in recent years. Strategic steps taken under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have increased the response capacity through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), artificial intelligence-based detection systems, an expanding air fleet, and modern infrastructure such as fire reservoirs.

The air fleet involved in firefighting operations comprises 132 aircraft, including 27 airplanes and 105 helicopters, and is supported by 25,000 expert personnel and 131,000 volunteers. Turkey ranks first in Europe and second in the world with 14 UAVs actively used in firefighting operations. Of the 776 watchtowers, 184 are equipped with smart systems, which have reduced the average fire detection time to as little as two minutes.

As for the land force, a total of 5,359 vehicles are actively deployed, including 1,786 water trucks and water supply vehicles, 831 construction equipment, and 2,742 first-response vehicles. Additionally, over the past 23 years, 4,796 fire ponds and water pools have been built, increasing response capacity.

Climate change-related factors such as rising temperatures, low humidity, and sudden wind shifts are accelerating the spread of fires, while challenging terrain and multiple fire outbreaks complicate response efforts. Firefighting efforts are continuing resolutely through technical, institutional, and community collaboration.

Authorities warned citizens against false and manipulative content spread on social media, urging them to only heed official statements.
