Arezzo, May 10, 2025 – Sofia Fiorini from Casentino has been called up by the Italian national team for the European Team Race Walking Championships . Technical director Antonio La Torre has released the list of twenty-two athletes who on Sunday, May 18, will have the task of holding the tricolor flag high in the top continental competition in Podebrady in the Czech Republic, testing themselves on the road in different categories and different lengths. This list also includes the name of Fiorini who, born in 2004 and raised in Atletica Casentino, will compete in the 20-kilometer race among the Women and who deserved the emotion of her first call to the senior national team alongside Olympic champions such as Antonella Palmisano or Massimo Stano.
The young athlete, a student at Bocconi in Milan and currently registered with Atletica Libertas Unicusano Livorno, has been one of the most promising Italian race walkers for many seasons now, with a path studded with numerous medals at the Italian championships that culminated in the conquest of gold at the Individual Promise Championships in 2024 in the 35 kilometers. The excellence of these results had been demonstrated by previous calls to the youth national teams and, above all, by the possibility of competing in 2022 at the World Race Walk Team Championships in the Under20 category in Muscat, Oman. The definitive consecration came in the early months of 2025 when Fiorini confirmed herself among the best Italian race walkers first with the Under23 silver and the overall bronze won at the Italian 35 kilometer race walk championships in Acquaviva delle Fonti (Ba), and subsequently with the silver at the Italian 20 kilometer race walk championships in Sant'Alessio Siculo (Me). These results have therefore opened the doors of the senior national team to participate in the now upcoming European Championships in Podebrady, demonstrating the quality of the preparation work carried out by a multi-professional team that also includes the Casentino physiotherapist and osteopath Emanuele Cherubini who, for years, has supported the race walker in the treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries to allow her to compete in the best conditions. "At the beginning of the season - comments Fiorini, - I would not have thought I would be able to get my first call-up to the senior national team at only twenty years old: it is a great satisfaction that gives me new energy to face the upcoming sporting commitments".
