Scott Bessent again defended Javier Milei and harshly criticized Democratic lawmakers.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated his support for Javier Milei amid the controversy surrounding the financial aid package for Argentina. He harshly criticized Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, asserting that the economic agreement generates “benefits for the American people.” President Trump's reaction further intensified the debate.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent continued his open confrontation with Democratic lawmakers while defending Javier Milei . In a message posted on X, Bessent called the libertarian leader a “great ally” and celebrated his electoral victory in Argentina, which was achieved with broad support from traditionally Peronist sectors.
Bessent addressed Warren and Klobuchar directly, criticizing them for trying to block financial aid to Argentina. “They failed to thwart the electoral success of one of our great allies in Latin America,” she stated, referring to Milei. Her message was personal and forceful, calling the senators “failures.”
. @SenWarren and @SenAmyKlobuchar : you are failures.
You failed to derail the electoral success of one of our great allies in Latin America, President @JMilei . He won in a landslide with the poorest members of society voting for economic freedom—a notion anathema in particular… pic.twitter.com/Q6bOQFDKBI
The official was one of the architects of the $20 billion currency swap with the Argentine Central Bank, as well as the purchase of pesos in the foreign exchange market. According to Scott Bessent, these measures not only stabilized the local economy before the elections, but are now generating benefits for the United States. “The Argentine economic bridge is now generating gains for the American people,” he stated.
Milei publicly endorsed Scott Bessent, calling his remarks a “tremendous masterclass.” President Donald Trump has also praised the secretary’s work, comparing him to leading figures in their respective fields.
Bessent didn't just praise Milei; she also attacked the federal government shutdown, in effect since October 1, blaming the senators for the harm done to farmers and federal programs. "If they choose to continue contributing to his legacy of failure by voting to keep the government shut down, they should be ashamed," she said.
Tensions between Bessent and the congresswomen have persisted since last week, when the official called Warren an “American Peronist” and shared an image comparing her to Evita. He also cited articles from media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal that highlighted the shift in voting patterns in working-class neighborhoods of Argentina toward Milei.
Meanwhile, expectations remain high for a possible second tranche of financial assistance to Argentina, which could involve another $20 billion through US banks. Pressure is mounting on Warren and Klobuchar, and the Trump administration is closely watching the Senate's decisions.
The dispute highlights how international financial decisions can become intertwined with local politics, both in the United States and in Latin America, and how Javier Milei is consolidating himself as a key player in this dynamic.
