Thailand imposes restrictions on alcohol consumption

The Department of Provincial Administration , a division of Thailand's Ministry of the Interior , announced the tightening of alcohol consumption regulations in the country. Under the new regulations, guests consuming alcohol outside of legal sales hours in bars or pubs could face fines of up to 10,000 baht (approximately 250 euros).
Legal basis for the changeThis measure is being implemented through an amendment to Article 32 of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act . The regulation clearly states that "consumption of alcohol outside of permitted hours is prohibited in establishments licensed for the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages."
Restrictions on alcohol sales have long been in place in Thailand. Alcohol sales are prohibited between 12:00 AM and 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM . The new regulation is notable for imposing penalties not only on sales but also on consumption of alcohol during these hours.
Uncertainty for entertainment districtsIt's not yet clear whether the measure will apply to entertainment districts like Pattaya and Phuket/Patong. Bars and pubs in these areas are already allowed to stay open until 4 a.m. Authorities will announce in the coming days whether special exceptions will be made for these areas.
