Dubbed the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the product features a screen on the right lens that displays apps, notifications, and directions. The glasses are controlled by a hand-gesture-sensing wristband called the Meta Neural Band.
$799 PRICE TAG
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on stage that the glasses will go on sale for $799 on September 30. Zuckerberg emphasized that, unlike the Orion, which was only shown as a prototype last year, the Ray-Ban Display is a real product that consumers will be able to buy soon.
It aims to replace the phone
Meta has long been forced to reach users through devices from Google and Apple. Having invested billions of dollars in virtual reality headsets, the company now believes AI-powered smart glasses are the most promising way to connect with users directly through its own hardware.
Ray-Ban Display, like the millions-selling Ray-Ban Meta sunglasses, features a built-in AI assistant, camera, speaker, and microphone. It connects to the internet and provides access to social media apps. Users can view apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook on the screen, follow directions, and access live translations.
EMG TECHNOLOGY BRACELET
The Neural Band, which comes with the glasses, looks like a smart bracelet without a screen. The device, which boasts an 18-hour battery life and water resistance, uses electromyography (EMG) technology to detect signals from the brain that guide hand movements. This allows users to navigate apps with small finger movements.
SIMPLER THAN ORION
The new glasses have more limited features than the Orion model that Meta unveiled in 2024. The Orion features advanced technologies like augmented reality lenses and eye tracking, while the Ray-Ban Display comes with a simpler screen. Meta is still expected to release the Orion for years to come.
Rivals at the door
Meta aims to gain an advantage in the smart glasses race by entering the market early. However, Google and Apple are expected to release their own smart glasses in the coming years. These devices are expected to offer a significant advantage over Meta due to their integration with the companies' own operating systems.
