'Artificial intelligence and social media are isolating'

While digital applications, the internet and social media make daily life easier, they also cause serious problems for mental health.
While digital addiction rates have been increasing rapidly around the world in recent years, disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders and social phobia are also becoming more common.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdoğan emphasized that increasing social media use, especially among young people, is fueling loneliness and a withdrawal from emotional relationships. He said, “While artificial intelligence has brought benefits to our lives, it also exacerbates psychological problems. Isolation and individualization are causing a rapid rise in illnesses like depression, anxiety disorders, and social phobia.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erdoğan stated that artificial intelligence-based psychological support applications offer limited benefits and are incompatible with human nature. "Humans are not merely mechanical beings; they require emotional interaction and communication. Receiving psychological support through artificial intelligence can exacerbate psychological problems," he said. Erdoğan emphasized the importance of seeking professional support for psychological issues, warning, "Instead of seeking support from artificial intelligence, we should consult trained professionals. Otherwise, we may do more harm than good."
Erdoğan stated that artificial intelligence could have negative long-term effects on cognitive abilities, adding that a decline in thinking skills could trigger diseases like Alzheimer's. He also predicted that the term "artificial intelligence addiction" could soon enter the literature.
Experts emphasize the need to raise awareness about the effects of digital addiction on mental health and to seek professional support.
