Biological age can be determined by photography
Researchers from various universities in different countries worked on the artificial intelligence tool called "FaceAge" as part of the study examining the relationship between the face and biological age.
Researchers trained an AI tool using photos and data from 58,851 people aged 60 and over to estimate people's biological age through photographs.
Analyzing facial photos of participants, most of whom had cancer, using FaceAge, researchers found that while healthy individuals appeared closer to their actual age, the faces of cancer patients appeared about five years older than their chronological age.
"BIOLOGICAL AGE ESTIMATES ARE CLOSELY RELATED TO PHYSICAL HEALTH"Researchers stated that the findings obtained as a result of the study showed that biological age estimates are closely related to physical health, and that in this way, the capacity of patients to withstand treatment can be determined.
While the researchers stated that biological age-based analyses could be useful in making decisions about critical treatments, they emphasized that more studies are needed to clearly understand how the system works.
While it is not known exactly how FaceAge determines a person's biological age, researchers are considering the possibility that the algorithm may be analyzing people's muscle mass and the areas around their eyes.
The results of the study were published in the journal "The Lancet".
