What is Akika sacrifice? When is Akika sacrifice performed?

The sacrifice made for a newborn child as a thank-offering is called "Aqiqa". It is sunnah to make an aqiqa sacrifice. According to the narration from Ibn Abbas (ra), the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) made an aqiqa sacrifice for Hazrat Hasan and Hazrat Husayn (Abu Dawud, Adahi, 21 [2841]; Nasai, Aqiqa, 3 [4219]), and in a hadith he said: "Every child is like a hostage in exchange for an aqiqa sacrifice to be made for him on the seventh day (of his birth). After the aqiqa sacrifice is made, the child's head is shaved and he is given a name." (Abu Dawud, Adahi, 20-21 [2837-2838]; Tirmidhi, Adahi, 21 [1522]).

In this respect, although the aqiqah sacrifice can be made from the day the child is born until puberty, it is more virtuous to make it on the seventh day of birth. It is recommended to give the child a name on the same day and to give his hair's weight in gold or its value as alms (Ibn Rushd, Bidayatul Mujtahid, 3/14-16).

CAN AKIKA SACRIFICE BE SLAUGHTERED DURING QURBANI HOLIDAY?

Akika sacrifice can be made during Eid al-Adha, because there is no specific day limit for akika sacrifice. It is recommended to make the sacrifice in the first week after the baby is born, but it can also be made at later times. The intention of the sacrifice made during Eid al-Adha is important. If the intention is made as "akika", this sacrifice becomes an akika sacrifice. It does not replace the "Eid al-Adha sacrifice".

CAN THE SAME ANIMAL BE SHAREHOLDERS FOR AKIKA, VOWS, UDHIYYA AND NAFILA SACRIFICES?

In the case of joint sacrifices, it is not necessary for each of the partners to sacrifice for the same purpose. Provided that each of the partners participates with the intention of worship, some of them may intend to sacrifice as an udhiyya sacrifice, while others may intend to sacrifice as a vow, aqiqah sacrifice or a voluntary sacrifice.
