Azerbaijani gas exports to Syria via Türkiye begin

Azerbaijani gas exports to Syria via Turkey have begun. Mikayil Jabbarov, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chairman of the SOCAR Supervisory Board, stated that Azerbaijani gas began to be exported to Syria via Turkey within a short time, in accordance with the agreements reached during the meetings held in Antalya on April 11, 2025, and subsequently in Baku on July 12, between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Minister Jabbarov stated that this development will contribute to Syria's energy security and emphasized that the strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, as brotherly countries encompassing all areas, including the energy sector, has enabled the rapid implementation of this historic project. He stated that the two countries are working together and taking important steps towards the reconstruction and development of Syria.
Mikayil Jabbarov stated that the transportation of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria via Turkey represents a significant milestone in the country's energy export history and lays the foundation for a new energy bridge between the South Caucasus and the Middle East. Minister Jabbarov noted that the number of countries Azerbaijan exports gas to has reached 14, and added that SOCAR's plans are even broader, with the company aiming to acquire shares in natural gas production projects abroad and deliver its gas to new consumer countries.
The Chairman of SOCAR's Supervisory Board spoke about Azerbaijan's strategic energy projects, stating that these initiatives play an invaluable role in ensuring the country's regional and global energy security. He stated that the opening of the Turkey-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline and the commencement of natural gas shipments from Azerbaijan to Syria have once again demonstrated Azerbaijan's status as a reliable and strategic energy supplier. He added that this project will significantly contribute to expanding Azerbaijan's natural gas export geography in new directions.
Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir thanked Azerbaijan and Turkey for their support in increasing prosperity and rebuilding Syria, which has been affected by the long years of war.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that they had signed a swap agreement with SOCAR for the delivery of gas from Azerbaijan across the Turkey-Syria border, saying, "Azerbaijan, with whom we share both sorrow and joy, has not withheld its support for this project as well." Minister Bayraktar noted that they would export natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria via Kilis, adding, "We will be shipping gas from the Yavuzlu Metering Station with a daily capacity of 6 million cubic meters. This will allow the power plants there to be commissioned soon. In the first phase, up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be exported to Syria annually. This natural gas will bring approximately 1,200 megawatts of installed capacity to operation. This project will make a significant contribution to the normalization of life in Syria, raise people's living standards, and accelerate their return to the country."
As part of the Azerbaijani delegation's visit, bilateral meetings were also held with delegations from Türkiye and Syria. Opportunities for expanding cooperation in the energy sector were discussed and ideas were exchanged on topics of mutual interest.
