Consuming caffeine in the evening can weaken self-control and provoke impulsive reactions. This is the conclusion reached by biologists from the University of Texas at El Paso during a series of experiments with Drosophila (fruit flies). The results of the study are published in the journal iScience.
The experts analyzed the effect of caffeine on the behavior of flies depending on the time of day and gender. After the substance was administered, the insects' ability to suppress impulsive reactions was assessed - for example, stopping a flight when faced with a sharp gust of air. The scientists explained that under normal conditions, flies stop when faced with a serious obstacle.
It was found that caffeine consumed at night significantly reduced the level of self-control in flies, especially in females: despite the discomfort, they maintained motor activity. Daytime caffeine intake did not cause a similar effect.
Although the concentration of the substance in the bodies of males and females was identical, the behavioral reactions differed. This, according to the authors, indicates the possible influence of genetic or physiological mechanisms that go beyond hormonal differences.
The researchers admit that the findings may apply to people, especially women, who work night shifts or drink coffee before bed. Potentially at-risk groups include medical workers, military personnel and other professionals whose work requires high concentration and self-discipline in the late hours.
