Russia has begun developing a vaccine against chikungunya fever, also known as the "disease of the bent." The drug is expected to appear no sooner than in two years.
According to SHOT , the Gamaleya Institute has prepared an application for a project to create a vaccine. Microbiologist Alexander Gintsburg says that there are powerful vaccine platforms that allow the drug to be created quickly. If the application is supported, development and preclinical studies will take no more than two years, after which the drug will be placed in reserve and taken to clinical trials.
Ginzburg notes that there is an understanding of how to respond to such threats. Theoretically, the virus could already be brought to Russia, but favorable conditions for the mosquitoes that carry it are needed for its spread. Everything necessary for the rapid development of a vaccine is ready.
Chikungunya is called the "disease of the bent" because of the severe pain in the joints. Another symptom is a rash. The infection is not fatal, but the symptoms last for weeks, months and years.
