They drowned out the Polish national anthem. That's what the TVP commentator did. Strongly.
On Friday, Polonia faced Ruch Chorzów at home. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but the most exciting moments came from what happened just before the match. The match was held on the anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, so the home team decided to play the national anthem.
In a recording posted on social media, Ruch fans can be heard singing the club anthem, drowning out the "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego" (Dąbrowski's Mazurka). Opposing fans reacted quite differently, even singing the third verse.
"I'm running out of words"A TVP Sport commentator reacted to the visitors' behavior. "I'm running out of commentary terms to describe the behavior of fans at Polish stadiums. Ruch Chorzów fans drowned out the 'Mazurek Dąbrowskiego'," he said on air.
Interestingly, the fans found an excuse for their behavior. "Ruch Chorzów fans started singing the club anthem much earlier, and they've been known for doing so for a long time. While the Polish national anthem was playing, they sang the end of the second verse," Dziennik Zachodni quotes an email from one fan.
An absurd, yet truthful, explanation. The fans had indeed begun singing their club's anthem earlier. However, it seems obvious that the moment Dąbrowski's Mazurka sounded, they should have stopped singing out of respect for national symbols.
