There will be no waste incinerator. The city's residents protested effectively

Instalmedia no longer wants to build an incinerator in Tychy. The company has withdrawn the application for development conditions submitted at the end of last year - informed the city's president Maciej Gramatyka.

Preparations for the construction of the installation have been ongoing for several years, but local residents protested against it. After the change of government in 2024, the new president, Maciej Gramatyka, announced that the incinerator would not be built. The local government was supposed to adopt development plans that would prevent construction. As it turns out, they will not be necessary.

"I received information that the board of the Instalmedia company withdrew the application submitted to the mayor of Tychy for issuing a decision on development conditions. Now, as we know, this application was considered by the mayor of Katowice, but due to the withdrawal of this application, this topic is not on the table," said Maciej Gramatyka at the last session, quoted by tych24.net.

The president announced that the local government will nevertheless proceed with the adoption of the local plan.

The residents of Tychy have been protesting against the construction of an incinerator in the Wilkowyje housing estate since 2022. The topic was revived when, in October 2024, the provincial assembly adopted a waste management plan for the region for 2023-2028, and the Instalmedia company applied for development conditions.

Following the pressure from residents, the city took specific actions to block the investment. Public consultations on the spatial development plan were held from March 18 to April 18. According to the plan, a ban on the production of heat and electricity through thermal processing of waste will apply in the area where the investment was planned.

It should be added that the decision on the development conditions was not in the hands of the local government in Tychy. In 2022, the previous mayor of Tychy, Andrzej Dziuba, issued a positive decision for the installation, but the SKO annulled the decision issued by him in its entirety and excluded him from making decisions.

The SKO also ruled that the mayor of Tychy cannot deal with the case, but should apply for the appointment of another body to consider it. Officials from Tychy transferred the case to the mayor of Katowice. Now the decision of the mayor of Katowice will no longer be necessary.

Instalmedia applied for development conditions in November 2024. The company's president is Henryk Borczyk, until recently vice-president of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis, associated with the Tychy local government.
