German automotive company loses market share in China. Closes plant in Nanjing

Volkswagen and SAIC are preparing to close the Nanjing plant, where models from the entire Passat lineup are currently manufactured. The decision is being driven by declining interest from Chinese customers.
SAIC Volkswagen Automotive Co. was established in 1984 as a joint venture in which SAIC Motor holds a 50 percent stake, Volkswagen AG 40 percent and Volkswagen (China) Invest 10 percent.
Last year, the company's several plants produced approximately 1.6 million cars for three VW Group brands: Skoda, Volkswagen, and Audi. Market share was 7%, a 12.9% decline.
Western and Japanese automotive companies are losing technological competition to local manufacturers in the Chinese market, especially when it comes to electric cars.
Production has already been discontinued in Nanjing, and now the dismantling of the technological lines has begun, which, according to the German economic daily Handelsblatt, will be transferred to another plant in Jiangsu province.
