Change awaits everyone. Electricity billed according to new rules

- Remote reading meters (REM) have a built-in memory where measurement data is saved. They allow for a departure from the method of calculating energy consumption based on forecasts.
- According to EU guidelines, all energy consumers must be equipped with such meters by mid-2031.
- Energa-Operator plans to install new meters on the network in 2026 and 2027.
Energa-Operator has announced a tender for over 700,000 remote reading electricity meters (REM). The order will allow the company to remotely measure all recipients connected to its network as the first network operator in Poland.
The purchased meters will be installed on the network in 2026 and 2027 , replacing the last traditional measuring systems, as well as those VOCs that, due to the passage of time, require legal replacement.
As the company claims, remote reading offers benefits to customers, including:
- quick change of tariff group,
- the possibility of using dynamic tariffs,
- using a number of new services that are currently being worked on at Energa-Operator and which will be made available in the near future.
Customers who have already had VZO installed also gain access to their measurement data via the “Mój meter” application (portal). The application enables, among other things, analysis and comparison of electricity consumption in individual tariffs and periods (hour/day/day/month/year)
- explains Energa-Operator.
Smart meters are one of the key areas of innovation in electricity networks.Smart meters are currently one of the key areas of innovation in power grids . The remote reading meter used to measure and bill electricity is equipped with a function for remote transmission of measurement data to the central system.
It must meet the requirements specified in the regulation of the Minister of Climate and Environment of 22 March 2022 on the measurement system. LZO has a built-in memory that records measurement data that are the basis for settling the distribution service and electricity consumed in a given billing period.
EU guidelines to be met. We reached 35 percent ahead of timeAccording to EU guidelines, 80% of energy consumers should have meters of this type by the end of 2028, and everyone by mid-2031. Here, however, the baton is in the hands of distribution system operators, who are responsible for implementing this technology. The regulations also specify milestones.
Poland met the previous condition of 35% by the end of 2025 in 2024 (6.8 million VOCs from 36% of recipients). By the end of December 2027, it should reach the level of 65%.
