Referees must better enforce protest guidelines

Referees in football should adhere more closely to the guideline that only a captain may protest about the management next season. This was stated by manager of referee affairs Raymond van Meenen during a media meeting in Zeist.
According to Van Meenen, the rules should be applied "a bit more strictly". Consultation between players and management is permitted, but only a captain may discuss a decision. If a goalkeeper is the captain, another player can be designated who may discuss the matter with the referee.
Van Meenen tells the referees that they should de-escalate where they can, but should take punitive action when necessary. "It is important for the image of football that a good example is given at the highest level," Van Meenen said in Zeist.
