From Zandschulp via Arnaldi to the second round of Wimbledon

Tennis player Botic van de Zandschulp has reached the second round at Wimbledon. The 29-year-old Dutchman surprised Italian Matteo Arnaldi (24), the world number 43, at the Grand Slam tournament in London. Van de Zandschulp won in three sets: 7-6 (4) 7-6 (5) 6-4. Van de Zandschulp and Arnaldi played the remainder of their match on Tuesday, which had been stopped the day before after two sets due to darkness.
Van de Zandschulp, number 92 in the world rankings, will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round. The Dutchman lost three of the previous four matches against the Spaniard, including two years ago at Wimbledon.
For Van de Zandschulp, the victory over Arnaldi was the first victory since mid-April in Munich. He then retired injured in Madrid, lost in the first round at Roland Garros and missed the Libéma Open in Den Bosch due to an upper arm injury. He was eliminated in the qualifications in Mallorca just over a week ago.
Van de Zandschulp reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022. That is his best performance at the grass tournament in London. Van de Zandschulp managed to reach the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament once. That was in 2021 at the US Open.
