Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) took the overall lead of the Tour of Austria yesterday after winning the fourth and penultimate stage in spectacular fashion with a spectacular overtake in the final sprint, thus securing his third consecutive stage victory.

In the final kilometers of the so-called queen stage of the Austrian tour, the Ensenada, Baja California native held onto third place behind Irishman Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost), while his teammate, Polish rider Rafal Majka, held the lead. However, with 500 meters to go, on one of the bends, the tricolor rider once again showed the power in his legs and launched a ferocious attack to break away from the group and confidently cross the finish line, thus confirming his dominance in the mountains.

The Mexican completed this challenging 117.3-kilometer stage, which spanned 117.3 kilometers between Innsbruck and the Kühtai Alpine pass at an altitude of 3,500 meters, in a time of three hours, 27 minutes, and 20 seconds, beating Ryan by four seconds and Majka by six seconds, who did an exceptional job supporting Del Toro.

Thanks to this victory, the 21-year-old cyclist, who recently won second place in the Giro d'Italia, is one step away from winning the Tour of Austria title, as he now has a total time of 13:58.08 hours in the general classification, with a lead of 29 seconds over Ryan, his closest rival, and 48 over Majka.

The competition will conclude this Sunday with the fifth and final stage, in which the cyclists will cover a 144.2-kilometer route, starting and finishing in Feldkirch at an altitude of 3,338 meters. Del Toro will have the opportunity to become the first Mexican to win the Tour of Austria, thus securing his first title in a high-level competition and taking another step towards the elite of world cycling.

In Tour de France action, Italian Jonathan Milan claimed his first victory yesterday by winning the eighth stage in Laval, while Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retained his yellow leader's jersey.

After a 171.4-kilometer run, Milan crossed the finish line ahead of Belgian Wout van Aert and Australian Kaden Groves, second and third, respectively.

Mexican Patricio O'Ward won his first race of the IndyCar season at Iowa Speedway, the fastest short oval in the world, completing the race in just 18 seconds. In the first of two races this weekend, the Monterrey native fought back from fourth place on the grid to take advantage on a bumpy Saturday that saw a red and yellow flag almost consecutively near the end.

American Josef Newgarden, who led the race for 232 of the 275 laps, almost caught up with Pato, but the Mexican managed to defend his lead and relegated him to second place. Australian Will Power crossed the finish line in third place. Three-time champion and standings leader Alex Palou finished in fifth place.

Pato thus celebrated his 100th race in the category and his eighth victory since beginning his adventure with Arrow McLaren in 2020.

With 19 laps remaining in the race, O'Ward was in the lead, but Newgarden was chasing him very fast and trying to pass on the outside. Pato remained firm and constant, never losing his position. With 13 laps remaining, an incident brought out another yellow flag that slowed the competition, but the Mexican managed to keep the American at bay. A superb pit stop by the Mexican secured him first place.

At 290 kilometers per hour, Pato conquered the oval in his first hundred races in the category and his happiness was overwhelming.

“It’s crazy. My 50th race was also a win here in Iowa in 2022,” the Monterey native recalled. “We’ve been waiting all year for this moment.

I did what I needed to do during the laps, very precise, with the right stops , noted the Monterrey native; we waited so long for this. I had to be very precise with every turn to be able to beat Newgarden at home. We're looking to do a double this Sunday .

Newgarden seemed upset about the second-place finish after leading for much of the race. He simply said he thought they had done a good job and hoped to get revenge.

The Mexican's strategy was impeccable, with good corner control and well-chosen pit stops to overtake American Newgarden, who started on pole position. Above all, he was praised for his decisiveness in the final pit stop to maintain his lead over the final 10 laps of the 275 laps on this 1.43-kilometer circuit.

Spaniard Palou, the overall leader, hopes to improve his performance in this Sunday's race, where he will start from pole.

Swiatek wins Wimbledon title

La Jornada Newspaper, Sunday, July 13, 2025, p. 9

London. For years, Iga Swiatek didn't feel comfortable on the grass courts of Wimbledon; she never thought she'd be able to add a trophy there to her other Grand Slam triumphs. Boy, was she wrong! And how wrong.

Swiatek is not only the All England Club champion, but she did so with a 57-minute, double-set 6-0 victory over American Amanda Anisimova in the first women's final at the tournament in 114 years in which a player failed to claim a single game.

"It feels surreal ," said Swiatek, a 24-year-old Pole who now has a 6-0 record in major title matches.

Honestly, I didn't even dream about this, because for me it was just too much, you know? , said the new champion.

With Kate, Princess of Wales, sitting in the Royal Box to present the trophies, Iga simply overwhelmed her opponent. The previous Wimbledon women's final with a similar result dates back to 1911.

"I was paralyzed with nerves. Maybe I was a little tired the last two weeks ," said Anisimova, who did not train on Friday due to fatigue and felt pain in her right shoulder while warming up before the match.

The Polish player already had four titles at Roland Garros and one at the US Open on hard courts, but this is her first in a grass-court tournament. She last won a Grand Slam in Paris in June 2024.

She is the eighth consecutive woman to win Wimbledon for the first time, but her triumph stands out because of how incredibly dominant it was.

Pumas' first disappointment

Necaxa attempted to be the first to strike a surprise blow against champion Toluca. For six minutes, they silenced the Nemesio Díez Stadium, so devoted to the songs of La Perra Brava—the team's main cheerleading group—with Pável Pérez's goal. But the Diablos' leadership not only won their Liga MX debut match, but also turned it around 3-1, under the auspices of their coach, Antonio Mohamed.

The ever-competitive Turco didn't flinch when the Devils went down. He trusted his players' personalities so much that he only had to raise the tone of his instructions for the rest to understand the message. Marcel Ruiz equalized with a header from a corner (27) and later, with his back to goal, he assisted Jesús Ángulo for the second goal (41).

Once in the lead, the reigning Mexican soccer champions handled the match intelligently. They took few risks, corrected mistakes that would have led to goals against them in the past, and, led by Mohamed, emphasized time and again that few are fortunate enough to take points away from home.

The Rayos were far from the image of an awkward opponent they left behind under Nicolás Larcamón, now at the helm of Cruz Azul. They also resented the lack of ideas from their former best midfielder, José Paradela. As if the gap between the two teams had not been clearly established, Helinho sealed the 3-1 victory in the final stretch of the match (90).

In Torreón, Santos, the team that finished last in the previous tournament, thrashed Pumas 3-0 at TSM Corona Stadium. Their superiority was so clear that the outcome was already decided in less than an hour of play.

Aldo López (13), Ramiro Sordo (54) and Cristian Dájome (88) scored the goals that caused the first setback for the university team, lacking ideas and hopeful of a future debut for Aarón Ramsey, their star reinforcement. Coach Efraín Juárez could change little on a night that was uphill from start to finish for his players.

Colombian Álvaro Angulo, a 28-year-old left back who coached Juárez at Atlético Nacional in that country, arrived in Mexico City hours earlier from Independiente of Argentina. Pending medical examinations and the signing of a contract, the university's board agreed to a trade for the departure of Argentine Ignacio Pussetto and $1.5 million, in exchange for adding the second reinforcement requested by their coach for this season.

"I'm going to reunite with a coaching staff I've already had. We did very well athletically at Atlético Nacional, and I know the institution he joined. I have to live up to expectations ," the former Rojo summed up about the past winner of the Juárez Cup at the helm of the Verdolagas, with whom he achieved a historic double in the Colombian league. "Efraín's influence was vital. He showed me his interest in me joining Pumas, and I accepted from the very beginning ."

Angulo and Ramsey hold for now the only hope of a change at Ciudad Universitaria

Goalkeeper Rodrigo Parra made his First Division debut with Pumas, becoming the youngest in his position to do so in the club's history. Due to his nervousness, he was instrumental in the Warriors' second goal.

Acapulco, Gro., Mexico defeated Japan 1-0 in a soccer match played yesterday at the Vicente Suárez sports complex, with the participation of members of the Japanese and Mexican navies.

The meeting took place in the context of the visit of the training ships Kashima and Shimakaze, part of the Japanese training squadron, which is taking place this weekend in the port of Acapulco.

On behalf of Mexico, the match was played by elements of the 22nd Marine Infantry Battalion, based in the eighth naval region, in Acapulco.

Representatives of Japan's navy participated.

The friendly match was played in three 20-minute periods. In the stands, the chile frito music was replaced by naval marches.

The match started off intensely and tightly in midfield. The Japanese team tried to create fluidity with the ball to surprise the Mexicans with speed, who, for their part, had to work hard to maintain their pace and maintain possession. The reward came five minutes into the second half, with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area that the visiting goalkeeper couldn't reach with a spectacular right-footed effort, after making three crucial saves at the end of the first third of the match.

In the third half, the Japanese bench players received an opportunity, a situation that the home side also took advantage of, in a duel that remained close and intense throughout, seeking to dominate the midfield.

During a break, the Japanese ambassador to Mexico, Kozo Honsei, highlighted the importance of the union between the two nations and expressed his satisfaction with the holding of cultural and sports activities within the context of the relationship between Mexico and Japan.

He also expressed his desire for the Japanese national team to have the opportunity to play a game in Mexico next year during the 2026 World Cup, where the country will host 13 matches.

Esmeraldas salvage a 1-1 draw against Xolas

La Jornada Newspaper, Sunday, July 13, 2025, p. a10

León managed to secure a valuable 1-1 draw against Xolas de Tijuana yesterday in the debut of both teams in the 2025 Apertura tournament of the Liga MX Femenil.

In the matchday one match at the Nou Camp stadium, the Mexican side took the lead in the 25th minute through Kassandra Ceja. Meanwhile, Luciana García, a member of La Fiera, leveled the score with a penalty in the 68th minute.

Thanks to this result, both teams earned their first point in the competition.

León, led by Alejandro Corona, made the most of their home advantage at the start of the match, creating some dangerous chances, but their lack of decisiveness in their final touches prevented them from invading Alexa Madueño's goal in the opening minutes.

For their part, the Xolas were unable to push the Esmeralda goalkeeper Natalia Acuña to the limit; however, they surprised their opponent in the 25th minute, when Ceja took control of the ball in the center of the area and, without hesitation, shot straight into the opposing goal to make it 1-0.

The goal motivated Juan Romo's team, who from that moment on had greater possession, although they were unable to score again and had to go into the break with a minimal advantage.

In the second half, both teams took to the field with great intensity, especially the Green Bellies, as they sought to salvage at least a draw on their own court.

That goal was achieved in the 65th minute, after referee Itzel Hernández awarded a penalty for a strong stamp in the area by Xolas' Emili Bautista on Sindia Arteaga. Luciana García was in charge of taking the penalty, leveling the score (1-1) after placing the ball just inside the left post of the Xolas' goal.

After the draw, both coaches made several changes to their lineups, which ultimately proved fruitless, as the score remained unchanged and the two teams had to settle for a split of points.

Matchday one of the 2025 Liga MX Femenil Apertura tournament will conclude this Sunday with the following matches: Puebla-Pachuca, Pumas-Monterrey, San Luis-Chivas, América-Cruz Azul, and Tigres-Toluca.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025

Expects 3 billion viewers today for the final

La Jornada Newspaper, Sunday, July 13, 2025, p. a11

New York., Although the Club World Cup was criticized for its lack of attendance, damage to players, and tensions over Donald Trump's anti-immigration policies, FIFA President Gianni Infantino asserted that the first edition of the tournament with an expanded 32-team format was a success .

"They told us no one would watch this competition, and tomorrow (today) we'll have between 2 and 3 billion viewers around the world ," the executive said hours before today's final between PSG and Chelsea, to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. "It's already the most successful competition in the world ."

While there were games in the group stage with attendances of fewer than 10,000 fans, Infantino said the U.S.-based tournament generated nearly $2.1 billion over 63 matches, equivalent to an average of $33 million per game .

Regarding matches with a small audience, he indicated that he would prefer to host 35,000 people in a stadium with 80,000 seats than 20,000 in one with the same number of seats .

No other club competition in the world comes close , he added, referring to the UEFA-organised Champions League, which has forecast revenues of €4.4 billion ($5.1 billion) for its four club competitions in 2024-2025 (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and Super Cup).

Trump will be at the stadium

The tournament began in a tense atmosphere due to the raids ordered by US President Donald Trump against undocumented migrants. However, Infantino thanked the president and his team , who have been fantastic . The executive also confirmed that the tycoon will be in the final today.

The Club World Cup, held in the United States, was a test run for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament sparked discontent due to the overcrowding of the players' schedule and the high temperatures.

Infantino acknowledged that heat is a real problem , especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Most of the World Cup matches were played in scorching temperatures, forcing organizers to introduce a break between halves for players to cool down, as well as fans on the technical bench.

In the decisive duel, PSG, under the command of Spaniard Luis Enrique, will be looking for four titles after their triumphs in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the Champions League, while Chelsea—whose coaching staff includes Mexican Bernardo Cueva—are looking to surprise with their second title in the tournament.

Sweden thrashes Germany 4-1 to advance to the Women's Euro Cup

Bern. Sweden confirmed their status as one of the favorites at the Women's Euro Cup by advancing undefeated and leading Group C to the quarterfinals of the tournament after thrashing Germany, the competition's all-time record winner, 4-1. Poland bowed out with a 3-2 victory over Denmark, who had already been eliminated.

The Swedes qualified with nine points, while the Germans, European runners-up, reached six points to move into second place in the group. Poland finished with three points, while Denmark finished with a clean sheet.

Both Sweden and Germany will learn their quarterfinal opponents after the final round of Group D, where current group leaders France will face the Netherlands this Sunday, and reigning champions England will face Wales.

The victory is historic for Sweden, as it was the first time in its history that it beat Germany at the European Championship, a record eight titles in the continental competition. The duel in Zurich between the two powerhouses was exciting from the start, physical, and featured quick transitions from one area to the other.

The match became easier for the Swedes after German forward Carlotta Wamser was sent off – just half an hour into the game – for deflecting a ball off the goal line with her arm.

By then, Sweden were already leading 2-1 after goals from Stina Blackstenius and teenager Smilla Holmberg cancelled out Jule Brand's early opener for Germany.

Fridolina Rolfö calmly converted the penalty after Wamser's red card, and substitute Lina Hurtig completed the scoring to cap a miserable night for Germany.

In the other match, Natalia Padilla scored a goal and was instrumental in the other goals as Poland beat Denmark 3-2, marking the first victory for the Poles in the history of the European tournament after making their debut in this edition.

Padilla, born in Spain, opened the scoring in the 13th minute and also contributed to the goals of Ewa Pajor (20) and Martyna Wiankowska (76).

The Danes pulled one back with goals from Janni Thomsen (59) and Signe Bruun (83), a response that was of little use, as both teams were already eliminated after suffering defeats in the first two rounds.
