Joaquín Niemann cautiously awaits his prey. Like a good hunter, the Chilean golfer waited for the right moment to attack his rivals, and on the 12th hole of the final round at LIV Golf México, he began the comeback that led to victory.
With a near-perfect game and a -15 card, the 26-year-old player surpassed Australian Lucas Herbert (-13) and American Bryson Dechambeau (-13), who tied for second place.
At the start of the day, I felt something special. The crowd gave me a lot of energy to play well and hit some great shots from the very beginning. On the 14th hole, I saw I had a stroke lead, and my head was spinning and I was imagining things
, added Nieman, who earned his fifth win in the league and his third of the season.
Joaquín, who will take home a $4 million prize, doesn't see money as the big reward; he plays for something else: the satisfaction of doing exactly what he envisioned.
“I play to be able to make the swing I imagine, to feel my body, to see the ball fly the way I want in the most difficult moments. That's where I push myself the most and where I truly thrive.”
The Chilean made his PGA Tour debut in 2018, after being the world's top amateur . In 2019, he celebrated his victory at the Greenbier Classic, becoming the first player from his country to win on the PGA Tour at just 20 years old. He then achieved his second triumph in 2002, winning the Genesis Invitational, a tournament hosted by Tiger Woods.
After arriving at LIV Golf, he achieved two triumphs in 2024. At the beginning of 2025, he received an invitation from Augusta National to play the Masters , where he was considered the best Latin American.
A mirror for the new generations
“My best memory of today is when I heard people saying, 'They're going to screw you,' referring to Dechambeau and Herbert. Mexicans always make me laugh a lot. As a Latin American, I hope that with this victory I can become a great role model for the new generations.”
Niemann extended his lead in the singles championship, sealed his status as the tour's top player, and secured his spot at the 2025 U.S. Open.
I think I'm experiencing the best moment of my career. Today I overcame the wind and the altitude, and I feel fulfilled and eager to continue adding victories on the tour.
With his victory, Joaquín tied Brooks Koepka for the most wins on the Saudi Arabian circuit. His first victory on the tour also came in Mexico, at Mayakoba in the Riviera Maya, during the start of the 2024 season.
American Bryson Dechambeau didn't have a good finish and despite leading the first two days, had to settle for second place.
The champion team was Legión XIII with -28, in second place was Ripper GC with -26 and in third place was Torque GC, to which the Mexican Carlos Ortiz belongs, with -21.
Ortiz finished in 16th place (-4) and his compatriot Abraham Ancer in 26th (E).
Thus, the Chapultepec Golf Club hosted the sixth event of the 54th season and the first since the Augusta Masters . This is the league's first visit to Mexico City and its third to the country, having played at Mayakoba in each of the last two years.
54 players participated in the tournament, two of them with wild cards .

The Red Devils rallied with a Robinson Canó home run to sweep the Querétaro Conspirators and achieve their record of seven consecutive victories. The Dominican, a former New York Yankees player, seemed to be in pause mode until the fifth inning when he hit a two-run homer to tie the score at 3-3, which ultimately resulted in a 12-5 Reds comeback.
That fifth inning was another devilish performance, which after tying the score with that home run by Cano, and with two outs , managed to add a six-run rally to put the score at 7-3 and from that moment on take control of the game.
In the seventh inning, the Conspirators scored twice and seemed to regain the aggressiveness they had shown at the start of the game. They even managed to get close, but with a constant offensive effort, the Diablos added four runs that unraveled their opponents. The climax was the last Scarlet run in the eighth to make it 12-5.
It was a six-homer game for the Colorados, with two home runs: a solo home run by José Rondón and a two-run home run by Canó, his second of the season.
Diablos Rojos returns to play at the Alfredo Harp Helú to host the Águila de Veracruz tomorrow.
Tricolors in the Major Leagues
Mexican Luis Urías hit a two-run home run with one out in the tenth inning to help the Athletics rally and beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in the decisive game of the series.
Urías homered to left field on the first pitch he saw from Jordan Leasure after JJ Bleday struck out to start the inning with Jacob Wilson on second.
Another Mexican, Jarren Durán, was amazing in a game where he contributed four hits as the Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 13-3.
The downside came when, during the seventh-inning break, he had a confrontation with someone in the stands. A fan in the front row was mocking Durán's suicide attempt.
He confronted the fan before Red Sox managers and umpires said they would handle the situation.
Although his team lost, Alex Verdugo had four hits and drove in two runs, but Atlanta fell 6-4 to Arizona. However, his fellow American and rival, Alek Thomas, enjoyed the victory, hitting one hit in four at-bats and driving in one run.

London. Tigst Assefa shook off the Olympic Games and won the London Marathon by defeating Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, who finished third. The Ethiopian took advantage of the warm weather to pull away in the final kilometers and win this event for the first time, setting a world record in an all-women's race with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds.
This was the fastest time recorded in a women's marathon, although it was 25 seconds shy of the course record set by Paula Radcliffe in 2003 in a mixed race.
Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir set the previous record for an all-women's race with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds when she won in London last year, beating Assefa. Her compatriot Ruth Chepngetich holds the overall world record with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds, for the 2024 Chicago Marathon.
The weather in London was warmer this year than last, with temperatures nearing 18 degrees Celsius as the elite runners approached the finish line, something that Assefa said worked in their favor.
In 2024, I had some issues with the cold, and my hamstring tightened toward the end of the race. This year, the weather was very favorable to me
, commented the Ethiopian, whose victory adds to her record of achievements, along with her two Berlin Marathon titles.
Assefa was defeated in a sprint finish by Hassan at the Paris Olympics in 2024. This time, she made sure to avoid a similar outcome: she left Joyciline Jepkosgei behind just a few kilometers from the finish line and ran alone along the Thames and through central London to reach Buckingham Palace.
I really wanted to win today after finishing second in Paris, so I trained really hard. This preparation has lasted more than eight months, and I'm obviously very happy that it's paid off.
Although he lost the Olympic gold medal in a pull, he explained that his attack several kilometers from the finish was unplanned.
“I prepared for any scenario. I knew I could win in a sprint , but I could also do it by getting to the finish line early. The most important thing was to train well, and that's what I did.”
Jepkosgei, the 2021 winner in London, finished nearly three minutes behind Assefa, exhausted in the closing stages. Dutchwoman Hassan fell behind midway through the race and finished third, 3 minutes and 10 seconds behind the leader.
In the men's race, Sebastian Sawe made running his first major marathon in unusually warm temperatures look easy. The Kenyan launched a solo attack with 10 kilometers to go and never showed any signs of flagging in the sunshine as he cruised to victory with a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 27 seconds.
Sawe took advantage of a moment when his rivals slowed down at a hydration station, where he opted not to drink water. "I was very well prepared for this race, and that's why it was easy for me to win
," he said.
Jacob Kiplimo, the world record holder for the half marathon, who was making his debut over the full distance, was the only one who attempted to catch him, but he never managed to close the gap. The Ugandan finished in second place, 70 seconds behind the winner.
Sawe, 29, had achieved his only previous victory at the Valencia Marathon in 2024. This was his first participation in one of the six majors (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York).
With this victory, Sawe becomes the fourth consecutive Kenyan runner to win the men's London Marathon. In a tight sprint for third place, Alexander Mutiso Munyao of Kenya edged out Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands in a photo finish. Mexican Marcelo Lagüera finished 17th with a time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 3 seconds.
Six-time Paralympic champion Catherine Debrunner defended her title in the women's wheelchair race by breaking the course record with a time of 1:34.18 seconds, just two seconds shy of the world mark she set at the 2023 Berlin Marathon.
In the men's race, Swiss Marcel Hug retained his title after holding off an attack from Japan's Tomoki Suzuki. Hug finished in 1:25.25.

Los Angeles., In a heart-stopping finish, the Los Angeles Lakers of LeBron James and Luka Doncic fell 116-113 to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are 3-1 in this first-round series of the NBA playoffs , as did the New York Knicks who won 94-93 against the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics who beat the Orlando Magic 107-98.
Doncic's 38 points and LeBron's 27 points and 12 rebounds were insufficient against the young Timberwolves led by Anthony Edwards, who reached 43 points.
The Lakers must win three straight to advance to the Western Conference semifinals, beginning Wednesday in Los Angeles. A 3-1 deficit has only been overcome 13 times in playoff history.
In the other game, the Knicks also moved within one game of clinching the series. New York stars Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns combined for 59 points in a game that ended with a play that Detroit criticized.
With 11 seconds left, the Pistons put the final possession of the game in the hands of their leader, Cade Cunningham, who missed a jump shot. After a fierce fight for the rebound, the ball reached Detroit guard Tim Hardaway Jr. in the corner, who missed a three-pointer at the buzzer after apparently being thrown off balance by his marker, Josh Hart.
The referees saw no foul on Hart's play and called the game off amid intense protests.

Ciudad Juárez, Chih., Near the end of the match, Salomón Rondón took advantage of an error to score the winning goal, in Pachuca's 2-1 comeback win over Monterrey in the play-in , with which they secured a place in the playoffs of the 2025 Clausura tournament.
Los Tuzos will face América in the quarterfinals, while Rayados still have a chance to qualify by playing against Pumas, who beat Juárez in the play-in , the last ticket to the big party.
Germán Berterame put Rayados ahead with an acrobatic shot in the 51st minute, following a cross to the far post by Jesús Corona.
Eduardo Gabriel equalized for the visitors in the 82nd minute, taking advantage when the opposing defense was looking for an offside position and being set up in the box to seal the win with a low shot.
Meanwhile, Rondón scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, thanks to goalkeeper Esteban Andrada's inability to control a long-range shot, which left the ball inside the area, where the Venezuelan striker arrived to finish with an open goal.
Andrada was booed by the disappointed Rayada fans because the goalkeeper was inept in the two saves that cost the Monterrey team goals.
Rayados missed veteran Sergio Ramos in the final stretch of the match, having been sidelined due to an injury in the final match of the regular season against León. The Monterrey team is hoping for the return of the star Spanish defender to host Pumas next weekend.

Milwaukee. Myles Turner scored 23 points and the Indiana Pacers won 129-103 to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their Eastern Conference playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks, who lost Damian Lillard to a left leg injury.
The Pacers can eliminate Milwaukee in the first round for the second straight year if they win Game 5 tomorrow in Indianapolis. Meanwhile, the Bucks have lost eight consecutive playoff games on the road, with the last five coming in Indiana.
Milwaukee could try to end that streak without Lillard. The seven-time All-NBA point guard was helped off the court and into the locker room after suffering a non-contact injury midway through the first quarter.
