Inspector Ricciardi Season 3: All the Locations for the Rai Drama Starring Lino Guanciale

Naples, December 1933. Inspector Luigi Alfredo Ricciardi returns to his investigations, guided by his unerring intuition and the gift that sets him apart from all others: the ability to see the ghosts of victims of violent deaths and hear their last thoughts. Maurizio de Giovanni 's most beloved character returns to Rai 1 with the third season of the TV series Il Commissario Ricciardi , airing across four prime time episodes starting Monday, November 10.
The first episode of the third season, "By My Hand," is based on Maurizio de Giovanni's novel "By My Hand. Inspector Ricciardi's Christmas." The second episode, "The Living and the Dead," is based on "The Living and the Dead. An Investigation by Inspector Ricciardi." The third episode, "The Angel's Purgatory," is based on De Giovanni's book of the same name. Finally, the fourth and final episode, "The Crying of Dawn," is the television adaptation of "The Crying of Dawn. Inspector Ricciardi's Last Shadow."
This new season recounts a pivotal moment in Ricciardi's life : despite the weight of his "fact" continuing to torment him, a ray of light finally seems to filter into his existence. After a long and silent courtship with his neighbor Enrica Colombo , the commissioner finds the courage to introduce himself to her father and make their relationship official.
What happens in season 3?The two begin to date, even though they face opposition from Enrica's mother. However, an unspeakable secret remains: the woman Ricciardi loves is completely unaware of his terrible gift, and the commissioner continues to bear its burden alone. Meanwhile, Brigadier Maione is once again overwhelmed by grief over the loss of his son Luca, a ghost from the past that never ceases to haunt him.
Dr. Modo, on the other hand, finds himself helping the son of Lina, the prostitute he loved and tragically killed by the street kids he himself had been involved with. On the romantic front, Livia has begun a relationship with Major Manfred , Enrica's former suitor. A bond born of sacrifice. The intense friendship between Ricciardi and Countess Bianca Palmieri di Roccaspina also continues, and she finds herself once again drawn into the commissioner's investigation.
Their closeness will force the Countess to make a difficult decision, one that could forever compromise her reputation. Among the various cases tackled this season, Ricciardi will have to confront a serial killer, at a time when the very concept of a "serial killer" was still unknown in criminology.
Where was it filmed?" We see the poor Naples, the same as in the other two seasons, which was reconstructed by the set designers in old Taranto . Then there is the rich Naples, reconstructed in the city and in Rome. Iconic places from the Fascist era in Naples were used, such as the Palazzo delle Poste and the Casa del Mutilato ," says the director regarding the locations, revealing the Filangieri Museum in Naples as one of the most evocative places where he filmed.
The authentic atmosphere of the alleys of Naples' historic center, which evokes authentic everyday life, was partially recreated in the streets and squares of old Taranto , following the same approach adopted in previous seasons. Filming in the Ionian capital took place from March 16 to April 19, 2024, for a total of five weeks. The cast and crew then moved to Rome, where filming continued until the end of May.
In Naples in the 1930s, under the fascist regime, Ricciardi holds the role of commissioner at the Royal Police Headquarters of Naples . In the fiction, his entrance takes place through the Palazzo della Prefettura , one of the most scenic buildings in Piazza del Plebiscito, dominated to the east by the Royal Palace and to the west by the neoclassical colonnaded façade of the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. The interiors of the Police Headquarters were recreated in the courtyard of the Capodimonte Museum .
The Prefecture Palace also overlooks Piazza Trieste e Trento, where the famous Caffè Gambrinus , a historic Art Nouveau café, is located on the ground floor. It is here that Maurizio De Giovanni imagined Ricciardi, transforming him into the protagonist of his novels. The commissioner often spends time at the Gambrinus, meeting with his friend Dr. Bruno Modo and Livia Lucani.

Opposite stands the prestigious Teatro di San Carlo , the scene of the murder of a famous tenor in the series. Also overlooking the square is the 17th-century Church of San Ferdinando , known as the Church of the Artists, where Ricciardi held discussions with Don Pierino Fava, a priest passionate about opera. Also not far away is the Teatro Sannazaro , located on Via Chiaia.
Naples and Taranto: Reconstructing the 1930sSome locations, such as the dressing rooms and tailor's shop at the San Carlo Theatre or the period Via Toledo with the Colombo family's shops , were reconstructed in the former NATO compound in Bagnoli . The stepped alleys of the historic center, seemingly Neapolitan, are actually Taranto's posterns, connecting the upper and lower parts of the city. Interior and exterior scenes were filmed here, including Via Duomo and Via Nuova.

In Portici , the Royal Palace was transformed into a hospital, while the former Landriani College hosted other filming locations.
Numerous Neapolitan palaces served as the backdrop: the Pensione Belvedere , which is actually Villa Volpicelli, a 17th-century building in Posillipo; Villa Pignatelli; Palazzo Mondo in Capodrise (CE), which in the fiction is the residence of the Dukes of Musso di Camparino; and the Church of Santa Maria Donnaregina Nuova.
