The Messina Strait Bridge is back at the center of public and institutional debate. After announcements, controversies and second thoughts, the project seems to be approaching a new decisive phase. Between technical meetings, economic assessments and political discussions, attention is growing around an infrastructure that promises to revolutionize connections between Sicily and the continent, but which continues to raise questions about costs, environmental impacts and feasibility.

Messina Strait Bridge, a turning point is coming: a decisive meeting

A meeting was held today at the Town Hall between the CEO of Stretto di Messina SpA, Pietro Ciucci, the mayor Federico Basile and the new commissioner of the Port Authority, Ciccio Rizzo.

At the center of the technical-political table, the long-awaited green light from Cipess (Inter-ministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development), which could arrive by mid-July, marking a crucial step for the definitive launch of the most discussed infrastructure project in the country.

The green light for the Strait Bridge project does not only concern the start of the main work , but also brings with it crucial decisions for the territory. Among these, the possible elimination of the highway toll on the “Ponte Gallo–Villafranca” stretch, a measure long awaited by local motorists. Furthermore, a significant part of the plan for the redevelopment of the existing road system is also linked to the approval, for a total investment of approximately 32 million euros intended to improve connections and infrastructure in the area affected by the future works.

“The goal is to send the plan including compensatory measures to the European Union within ten days . Then the green light from Cipess by the end of June, then 40 days for publication in the Official Journal. Then the work will start at the end of the summer.”

The president of Stretto di Messina SpA, Pietro Ciucci, returned to Palazzo Zanca today for an institutional meeting with the mayor Federico Basile, aimed at taking stock of the progress of the Bridge project and the implications for the territory . The meeting was also attended by the deputy mayor and councilor for public works, Salvatore Mondello, and the new commissioner of the Port Authority of the Strait, Francesco Rizzo.

In the afternoon , a meeting is also scheduled with the president of the Sicilian Motorway Consortium , Filippo Nasca, to address the issue of the toll on the Messina Nord–Villafranca motorway section, the possible elimination of which is at the centre of the requests of the territory.
