Pope Leo XIV, today's news. The first mass in the Sistine Chapel

The Conclave elected yesterday afternoon, in the fourth round of voting, the American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome, who chose to call himself Leo XIV , an indication in itself since Leo XIII is the Pope of Rerum Novarum, the encyclical that founded the social doctrine of the Church on 15 May 1891. The white smoke , at 6:08 p.m., was greeted by the applause of over one hundred thousand faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square. This morning there will be the first mass reserved for cardinals in the Sistine Chapel.

Federtennis President Binaghi: “Proud of his passion for tennis, I invited him to the Internationals”
"Will I invite the Pope to the Internationals? I've already done it, I wrote to him yesterday. I don't know if he'll be able to come to this edition, it seems like a lot to me, but who knows: miracles also happen in life". This is what the president of the Federtennis, Angelo Binaghi, said about the new Pontiff's passion for tennis. "I knew that Pope Leo XIV is a great tennis fan, it's a source of pride for us. Also the fact that we have the new Fitp headquarters in a former Augustinian convent in Rome. We're renovating it. I'd say not one, but two coincidences", he concludes.

Robert Francis Prevost , Pope Leo XIV, went last night to greet some people at the palace of the Holy Office where he has lived since 2023. The new pontiff, 69 years old, the first North American in the history of the church, born in Chicago to parents with Italian, French and Spanish origins, had his picture taken in the courtyard, where he gave a blessing. China, the Patriotic Church congratulates Leo XIV
The Patriotic Catholic Association and the Episcopal Conference of China , supported by the Beijing government and the Communist Party, "sent a message of congratulations to the new Pope Leo XIV for his election." This was reported by the state agency Xinhua in a one-line dispatch. China and the Vatican do not have official diplomatic ties , but in October 2024 they extended for 4 years the historic 2018 agreement wanted by Pope Francis on the joint appointment of bishops in China. The Catholics of the Dragon are divided between the underground church faithful to the Holy See and the Patriotic Catholic Association, under state supervision.
"The hope, under the leadership of the new pope, is that the Holy See will continue to engage in constructive dialogue with China and conduct in-depth communication on international issues of mutual concern," Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said.

Brother John: “It was a shock, I couldn’t believe it”
"I didn't think it would happen. There was some possibility, but I was just as surprised as everyone else when his name was mentioned," John Prevost , the older brother of Pope Leo XIV, told the US media from his home in the southern suburbs of New Lenox. A retired Catholic school principal, John, 71, has not yet processed his brother's rise to the papacy. The election, the Daily Herald website says, "was a shocking moment," he said.
"I was on the phone with my niece and we couldn't believe it. Then the phone, the iPad and my cell phone went crazy," he said. "We had a normal childhood," he said. "It's a little strange, but all three of us knew what we wanted to do from a young age. And Rob - that's what we called him from a young age - knew he was going to be a priest from the time he could walk. A neighbor once said he was going to be pope someday." The last phone call, the night before the conclave. "He said, 'What should I call myself?'" John recalled. "I told him it shouldn't be Leo because he was going to be the 13th. But he must have done some research to see that he was actually the 14th."
