Car hits bar patrons in Evreux after altercation: one dead, five injured and three in custody

Following an altercation in a bar , the driver of a car allegedly "deliberately" hit a group of people on the night of Friday 29 to Saturday 30 August 2025 in the centre of Evreux, leaving one dead and five injured , two of whom are in critical condition, we learned from the public prosecutor's office.

In a wine bar in the city center, around 4 a.m., "there was an altercation (...) between several people, notably between a young woman and several men," Evreux public prosecutor Rémi Coutin told an AFP correspondent.

The bouncers then decided to force everyone in the establishment, around a hundred people, outside, according to the same source.

Two people still in absolute emergency

"It was at this point that, no doubt following the altercation that took place inside the nightclub, a person allegedly went to get a vehicle (...) and deliberately reversed at high speed into the crowd outside the establishment," added the magistrate.

"Unfortunately, we have a very high death toll, as one person died on the scene and five were injured, including two people who are in critical condition as we speak," said Mr. Coutin. The five people were hospitalized at the Evreux University Hospital. The deceased was a man, the prosecutor also said.

Several suspects in custody

"At least two people who were in the vehicle and a third who was outside," two men and a woman, were taken into custody at the Evreux police station, Mr. Coutin said.

An investigation into the crime of homicide and attempted homicide has been opened, according to the magistrate, who ruled out any "terrorist, racist or other" motive .

"At first glance, we are starting with the idea of ​​an altercation between customers of this bar which, as a result, completely degenerates and results in a terrible tragedy," he summed up.
