Labor reform in Colombia: This is how medical appointment permits will change with the new law

The new labor reform, whose provisions have already entered into force, changes the context for workers in certain situations. Law 2466 of 2025 includes new permits and new paid leave for workers, tipping the balance more in favor of workers.
How are medical consultation permits changing? The labor reform enacts significant changes to medical appointment permits, providing workers with a legal framework to guide them on what they can do when they need to visit a health center.
- New paid leave: New paid leave for medical appointments is included. This may mean that employees who need it can take time off to attend these appointments without any reduction in pay or being required to make up for lost time.
- Amendment to the Substantive Labor Code: Article 57 of this statute is amended by Article 15 of the law. The amendment requires employers to provide the necessary paid leave for workers who have to deal with various situations, including medical appointments.
- Appointment Coverage: The provisions specify that urgent medical appointments and scheduled appointments with specialists receive priority coverage and compensation. However, appointments must be arranged with the employer and a certificate must be presented. Preventive checkups and other medical appointments are also mentioned.
- Strengthening the legal status of medical appointments: This reform protects employers from potential retaliation for attending medical appointments, as it allows employers to have the necessary time without worrying about what the employer might do with their money.
- People with endometriosis are protected: this is a disease that causes intense pain in women and usually begins with the first menstruation and lasts until menopause. The government specifically includes cases related to the diagnosis of this disease, which is covered by Law 2338 of 2023.

Changes to employment contracts, more benefits for SENA apprentices, privileges for people with disabilities, more nighttime pay, changes to the work schedule, and changes for independent workers are some of the most important aspects of the government's proposed labor reform.
