First the game, then he lost control: Luis Suárez isn't making a good impression after Inter Miami's defeat in the Leagues Cup. Lionel Messi's pugnacious friend now recognizes this himself. Suárez is known for being a hothead and has had a few outbursts in his life.
Soccer star Luis Suárez has apologized for his behavior after Inter Miami's League Cup final defeat, when he apparently spat in the direction of an opposing supporter. He wanted to congratulate the Seattle Sounders on their victory, but "above all, I want to apologize for my behavior," the 38-year-old former Uruguay international wrote on Instagram. "After the game, things happened that shouldn't have happened. But that doesn't justify my reaction. I was wrong and I sincerely regret it."
The Florida team, led by Suárez and his teammate Lionel Messi, lost the final against Seattle 3-0. Afterward, Suárez attacked an opposing staff member. The Athletic and other media outlets reported that he apparently spat in the staff member's face. The attacker had previously been involved in a scuffle with Seattle's Obed Vargas.
"This is not the image I want to present to my family, who are suffering because of my mistakes, nor to my club, which doesn't deserve to be affected by something like this," Suárez wrote. Major League Soccer has launched an investigation; whether the striker will be punished is not yet known.
Suárez is known for his hotheadedness and has had several outbursts of this kind. Images of his unsportsmanlike conduct at the 2014 World Cup, when he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, went viral. The 38-year-old has been punished several times throughout his career for other attacks on opponents and racist insults.
