In the 2025/26 UEFA World Cup qualifiers, 54 teams from Europe will compete for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This represents all European football associations except Russia, which remains suspended by UEFA and FIFA due to its war of aggression against Ukraine.
- The 54 teams are divided into twelve groups (six groups of four and six groups of five).
- Each nation plays against the other group opponents in a home and away match.
- The group winners qualify directly – the runners-up go into the play-offs.
Outside of Europe, more than 200 national teams worldwide are participating in World Cup qualification. Each continental federation organizes its own qualifying competition:
- AFC (Asia and Australia): Multi-tiered league system with preliminary and group rounds. Eight Asian teams qualify directly, and one more can enter the competition via the intercontinental playoffs.
- CAF (Africa): 54 African nations compete in nine groups, with the winners advancing directly to the World Cup; some runners-up have a chance to advance to the playoffs.
- CONCACAF (North and Central America, Caribbean): Mexico, the USA, and Canada have already qualified as hosts. The remaining teams will play in several rounds for the remaining spots in the region.
- CONMEBOL (South America): All ten nations compete in a single league (round robin, home and away). The top six qualify directly, and the seventh-place team advances to the playoffs.
- OFC (Oceania): The qualifying phase has already ended. For the first time, Oceania has secured a World Cup berth; one more team can advance to the intercontinental playoffs. New Zealand is directly qualified, and New Caledonia has qualified for the playoffs.
The qualifying phase for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Europe runs from March 2025 to November 2025. The playoffs, in which the final European tickets will be awarded, will follow immediately afterward in March 2026. By then, all World Cup participants will be determined.
