HSV women in raptures - VfL Wolfsburg wants goal-line technology
The HSV women celebrated the 3-3 draw against VfL Wolfsburg in their Bundesliga return as a victory. The Wolfsburg women were not only annoyed by the late equalizer, but also hope that goal-line technology will finally be introduced for the women's team soon.
When referee Angelika Söder blew her whistle and awarded a goal to HSV, the Volksparkstadion erupted. The players stormed the north stand in celebration, where the entire bench arrived shortly afterward. The 3-3 draw in the 97th minute against the heavy favorites Wolfsburg, which no one thought possible, sparked a collective frenzy of joy.
I don't think the referee or linesman can say with certainty from that angle that the ball went in.
Everyone at VfL, however, was utterly stunned: Stina Johannes, who thought she had saved Svea Stoldt's free kick through a combination of play and the post, was utterly shocked. The goalkeeper tried to convince Söder otherwise. But this was just as unsuccessful as coach Stephan Lerch's protest on the sidelines to fourth official Anna-Lena Heidenreich.

"I'm angry and disappointed," goalkeeper Johannes said shortly afterward in an interview. "I don't think the referee or the linesman can say with certainty from that angle that the ball was in the goal. I had the ball right in front of me, and in my estimation, it was still on the line."
Lerch: "We should talk about goal-line technology "Even the TV images couldn't definitively determine whether the ball was in or out. This, in turn, led VfL coach Stephan Lerch to the obvious demand: "We should start talking about goal-line technology. Perhaps that's an option we can implement. It would have been good at this point, regardless of the outcome. Because then you have to say: If it was in, it was in."
Goal-line technology, like video replay, isn't yet available for women's football. However, given the comparatively significantly lower costs, Lerch hopes that the Bundesliga will at least implement goal-line technology "soon."
Wolfsburg already looked like the sure winnerHowever, Lerch and Johannes were not only annoyed about the late and possibly unjustified equaliser, but also about Wolfsburg having thrown away what they thought was a sure victory.

The "Wolves" had everything under control and looked like sure winners. Lineth Beerensteyn (26th minute) and Janina Minge (29th minute) had given the visitors a 2-0 lead. Alexandra Popp responded to Sophie Hillebrand's goal (31st minute) at the beginning of the second half with a 3-1 lead (52nd minute). And after that, not much else happened.
"We lacked strength and conviction after the 1-3 defeat," explained HSV coach Liése Brancao, who, however, had a simple explanation for her team's ability to bounce back. "The fans gave us another boost."
Volksparkstadion as a "great advantage" for HSVFirst, new signing Melanie Brunnthaler restored hope with a dream goal. "Everyone told me at halftime to shoot at goal. And when the ball finally came, I knew: Now's my chance," the 24-year-old described her thoughts before firing a powerful 16-meter shot into the top corner to make it 2-3 (81').
I didn't really see it. I just saw everyone cheering, and then I joined in. I don't know—a goal is a goal.
Now everything seemed possible again, and the fans continued to spur HSV on. "I'm not sure we could have managed this turnaround away from home," said Brancao. "The atmosphere in this stadium is a huge advantage for us."

In the seventh minute of stoppage time, HSV were awarded another free kick from the halfway line. Stoldt cut the ball towards goal. Both friend and foe missed. Johannes was on it, and so was the post – and just after the goalkeeper had brought the ball under control, the whistle blew, and the referees awarded the score 3-3.
Even VfL goalkeeper Johannes praises the HSV fansStoldt spoke of a "crazy feeling." For Pauline Machtens, it was "pure madness." She had goosebumps at many moments during the game, the HSV captain added: "It was incredibly exhausting. But the final push from the fans helped us incredibly."
Nearly 12,000 spectators provided a worthy backdrop for the first-ever Women's Bundesliga match at the Volksparkstadion. And even VfL goalkeeper Johannes appreciated it despite all the adversities: "It was an amazing crowd, an amazing stadium. As soon as I heard that the HSV women were playing here at the Volksparkstadion, I was very happy. At least from the sidelines, it was a lot of fun here in the stadium. The pitch and the fans were fantastic."
