Dortmund loses to Juventus in Hummels' departure

Borussia Dortmund lost its final tough test before the start of the season. In the departure of Mats Hummels, BVB lost to Juventus Turin.
BVB lost 2-1 (0-1) to the Italian record champions on Sunday. In the final test before the start of their competitive campaign, the 36-year-old 2014 World Cup winner was once again in the starting eleven and led his former team onto the field as captain.
With Hummels in the lead, BVB started the match with commitment and initially had everything under control. But the visitors from Italy took the lead with their first attacking move: After a cross from Pierre Kalulu, Andrea Cambiaso escaped the Dortmund defense and scored from close range to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute.
Hummels' substitution with guard of honor and standing ovationsJust a minute later, Hummels was sent off to the bench to a standing ovation and a guard of honors from all the players. Even before kickoff, the long-time defensive leader had been greeted with thunderous cheers and chants of "Mats Hummels" from the 81,365 fans in the sold-out Dortmund stadium.
Niklas Süle came on for Hummels, but had to leave the pitch shortly before halftime, apparently with ankle problems and limping. The next setback came just minutes after the restart: After a dream combination from the visitors, Cambiaso again converted from a tight angle to score his second goal (53').
BVB's competitive opening match against Rot-Weiss EssenAfter that, not much happened on the pitch. Due to numerous substitutions, the flow of the game was increasingly lost. Some BVB fans left the stadium minutes before the end of the game, thus missing substitute Maximilian Beier's consolation goal in the 89th minute.
Borussia Dortmund will face third-division side Rot-Weiss Essen in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on August 18 (8:45 p.m.). Just under a week later (August 23, 6:30 p.m.), Niko Kovac's team will kick off the new Bundesliga season at St. Pauli .
