Axel Kaiser has been trying to get rid of his company for about a decade. Two attempts to install a new managing director have already failed, even an appearance on "The Lion's Den" didn't bring about the desired change, and so far, no one has wanted to buy his company, says Kaiser. Despite this—or perhaps precisely because of it—the now 62-year-old has continued. And it could pay off.

No, this isn't just another story about a boomer who can't find a successor for his mid-sized business, Kaiser makes clear right at the beginning of our conversation. His story is about something else. It's about a good idea that no one seemed open to for a long time. And about a startup CEO who perhaps never really wanted to be one. Kaiser likes to flirt with this, describing what he does as "absolute amateurism." But to understand how Kaiser got to this point, the story must be told from the beginning.
