I visited charming UK market town with the best high street in the country

Living in London, life can feel a bit hectic sometimes. I love living in the city, but I do try to get out at least a few times a year so I can recharge. One of my favourite places that I have visited is famous for its laid back vibe and charming high street.

Totnes is a market town in Devon, known for being home to artists and having a thriving bohemian community. It’s also got, in my opinion, one of the best high streets in the country. If you start at the bottom of the street, you can cross the bridge that spans the River Dart and really soak in the vibe of the town from it.

In the summer months, the town is festooned with colourful bunting, and small boats drift across the water.

There’s lush green riverside, and the town hums with life. Once you’ve crossed the bridge, stop in for a coffee at The Curator - the first of many independent shops that are dotted along the high street.

The coffee is fabulous, and they have a great selection of pastries if you fancy sitting in for a bite to eat - but don’t fill up too much, there’s plenty more to explore.

The high street winds gently upwards and is lined with hundreds of independent boutiques, charity shops and tea rooms.

Further up the high street, there’s the Cornish Bakery, which fills the street with the delicious savoury smell of pasties.

They have options for everyone - even my vegan brother found something he loved.

As the high street curves round to the left, you’ll find Butterworth’s Vintage Co - a small but mighty second-hand shop selling everything from knitwear to workwear and even vintage magazines.

Once you’ve browsed the shelves, you might fancy a quick pint or even another bite to eat - and you’d be in luck.

Just up the road from Butterworth’s is The Bull Inn - a stunning pub with an extensive, organic food menu - and nine rooms to stay in if you need a place to bed down.

My favourite part of the Bull Inn is the charming garden where you can relax in the sunshine and watch the world go past. It’s located just across the carpark, and like the rest of the town, is often covered in beautiful bunting.

On a sunny day, you really can’t beat it - and if you’re anything like me, you’ll need to sit down after all your retail therapy walking up the high street.
