Special sign for Armagh SFC winners burnt to crisp by vandals

Madden Raparees secured an iconic title on the weekend, defeating Cullyhanna, 0-20 to 0-09, in what was their first Armagh SFC final.

They then received further attention, which we reported on, after celebrating alongside Tyrone champions Loughmacrory.

To honour their win, a sign was placed on Farnaloy Road, beside a permanent sign pointing the way to the town.

However, the celebratory object was burned beyond recognition by vandals.

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan condemned the attack.

He said: “I condemn in the strongest terms the disgraceful burning of the congratulations sign for the Madden Senior footballers.

“We have reported this criminality to the police and will fully support their investigation.

“At a time when our community is filled with pride and joy, this act is deeply disappointing and does not reflect the true spirit of Madden — one of unity, respect, and pride in our team.

“Now is the time to stand together, support one another, and continue celebrating the success of our players, coaches, and everyone involved in this remarkable season.

“Sinn Féin will continue working with all relevant bodies and the wider community to ensure those responsible are held accountable and that our shared sense of pride and togetherness endures.”

This is not the first time that Madden have had a sign vandalised.

Back in 2024, a sign wishing members of the Armagh All-Ireland final team was covered with sectarian grafitti.

Boylan also condemned this act.

At the time, he said: “The fact that the signs wishing Madden players all the best in the All-Ireland Final have been defaced with sectarian language.

“People all over the county are embracing this wonderful opportunity to celebrate our football stars and the massive effort they have put in to get into their first All-Ireland final in 21 years.

“Sectarianism has no place within our community.

“The people of Madden are proud of their GAA heritage and we wish Niall Grimley and Darragh McMullan and all the players and management the very best for the weekend.”
