Mayo side to appeal to Croke Park as two-point debacle rumbles on
The fallout from the Mayo Intermediate Championship game between Hollymount Carramore and Kilmaine last Friday, September 5, continues, with the objection to the result from the former thrown out by Mayo GAA.
The game finished in a draw, which saw Kilmaine advance, while Hollymount were eliminated when a win would have put them through.
The controversy arose when a first-half score from Kilmaine’s Kevin Mullin was awarded as a two-pointer, despite replays clearly showing that it was within the arc.
Referee Declan Corcoran also acknowledged his mistake in an email sent to Mayo GAA after the game.
He said: “In the 28-29 minute of the first half of this game I awarded a 2 pointer to Kilmaine. On reviewing Mayo GAA TV footage I’m acknowledging that I made a mistake and it should have been a 1 pointer to Kilmaine instead of a 2 pointer, as the player was inside the 40m arc at the time he kicked the ball.”
However, as pointed out by the Irish Examiner’s John Fogarty, the GAA sent a notice to county boards reminding them that the result of matches can only be successfully appealed if a score is recorded incorrectly or if a score is not awarded.
The GAA said: “In light of queries received (in recent days) relating to potential objections to scores being awarded or not awarded in games which affect the outcome of the game, the Rules Advisory Committee would like to draw attention to the provisions of Rule 7.5, particularly 7.5 (n) (ii) regarding decision to an incorrectly recorded scored as distinct from the decision of the referee to allow or disallow a score: a Competition Control Committee must make decisions in accordance with the provisions of Rule 7.5.”
In response to Hollymount, the Mayo’s Competition Controls Committee referenced this rule.
They said: “We are satisfied that the score he (referee, Declan Corcoran) allowed was recorded correctly in accordance with rule 7.5 n (ii).”
But the controversy does not look to be over yet, as Mayo News’ Michael Gallagher reported that the disgruntled club are expected to appeal the ruling to Croke Park.
This leaves next weekend’s quarter-final between Kilmain and Kilmeena in doubt.
