Colm O'Rourke Identifies Three Major Problems Galway Must Solve

Colm O'Rourke believes Galway are wasting one of the county's most talented generations of footballers, claiming their system of play has become "a noose around their neck".

Writing in the Irish Independent following Galway's All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Dublin, the former Meath manager delivered a damning assessment of Pádraic Joyce's side.

Galway exited the championship after surrendering a late lead to Dublin at Croke Park, with the Tribesmen now having lost two successive All-Ireland quarter-finals.

For Colm O'Rourke, the problem runs much deeper than one defeat.

Galway are losing a generation of talented players to a system of play which has become a noose around their neck.

The former All-Ireland-winner questioned how a side boasting players of the calibre of John Maher and Céin D'Arcy could continue to come up short in the biggest games.

How could you not win big games with John Maher and Céin D'Arcy winning an amount of ball around the middle third and a forward line with such individual skill?

O'Rourke then outlined what he believes are the three biggest flaws in Galway's approach.

There are reasons.

The kick-outs are a raffle, the back line is not good enough to win big games and the ball comes in so slowly that opposition defences are locked and loaded.

He also suggested Shane Walsh's influence has diminished significantly since his heroic performance in the 2022 All-Ireland final.

Walsh produced one of the greatest individual displays ever seen in a decider that day, scoring nine points as Galway were narrowly beaten by Kerry.

O'Rourke contrasted that performance with the current trajectory of Walsh's career compared to David Clifford's.

Four years ago he gave one of the great displays in an All-Ireland final. He scored nine points in old money, David Clifford scored eight and it was a toss up as to who was the best player on the field.

Since then their careers have diverged.

Clifford has inspired Kerry in almost every game.

Walsh, on many occasions like last Sunday, becomes peripheral and frustrating to watch.

Colm O'Rourke did acknowledge Walsh's starring role in Kilmacud Crokes' All-Ireland club success in 2023, but believes Galway have failed to consistently get the best from one of the country's most gifted forwards.

With Galway now facing another off-season of soul-searching, O'Rourke's criticism adds to the growing scrutiny surrounding the county's style of play after another championship campaign ended in disappointment.
