Major Kindle update tomorrow and it's terrible news if your model is on this list

Kindle users were warned last month that their e-readers may soon lose access to new books. Now that deadline is just 24 hours away with the block coming into force from May 20, 2026. This update affects older models - such as the Kindle 5 and the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen - and will mean that nothing new can be added or read.
If you are worried that you are being hit by this Amazon update, we've got a list of models that will be blocked from the book store this week.
HERE IS THE FULL LIST OF AFFECTED DEVICES
Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
Kindle Keyboard (2010)
Kindle 4 (2011)
Kindle Touch (2011)
Kindle 5 (2012)
Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)
It's worth noting that owners won’t lose access to books they already own, as existing libraries will remain available. However, once the deadline arrives tomorrow, the affected Kindles will effectively become “read-only” devices.
“Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store," Amazon told Mirror Online.
“These models have been supported for at least 14 years — some as long as 18 years — but technology has come a long way in that time, and these devices will no longer be supported moving forward.”
It’s clearly a major upset for those who own these older Kindles. However, Amazon is trying to soften the blow of losing book access with the offer of discounts on something new.
The company is currently notifying customers whose devices are affected and is offering 20 percent off selected new Kindle models along with a £15 eBook credit.
There are, of course, plenty of new Kindles to choose from, with Amazon now offering standard models along with Colorsoft devices that feature a colour screen.
Those wanting more than just a way to access books might want to check out the Scribe range, which all come with a digital pen for writing notes, annotating documents, and marking up books.
