North West Completed Her OOTD With a Hatsune Miku Reference

Over the last couple of years, North West has made it clear she has a penchant for unconventional styling, from spiky hair embellishments to maximalist 3D nails and everything in between. The 12-year-old loves to add an unexpected twist to almost all of her outfits, but her latest might take the cake—at least at first glance.
In a new series of videos posted to the TikTok account she shares with her mom, Kim Kardashian, North West can be seen proudly rocking a very unexpected accessory: a green onion plushie. (Yes, it's not actually a leek!)
As mentioned before, at first glance, the accessory might feel out of left field. You might initially think it's an extreme continuation of the charm trend popularized by Labubus and Monchhichis, but for many, it's actually a bit of an internet deep cut.
If you move in the same online spaces as her, you'd soon recognize that the addition of the green onion is actually a reference to Hatsune Miku. More specifically, it's a reference to Hachune Miku, a chibi version of the Japanese EDM Vocaloid, who also totes around a spring-onion-inspired look, in turn inspired by the Loituma Girl animation.
North West channeled Miku in multiple videos, dancing to various sound bites, including her own song “Aishite," Hatsune Miku's song ”I got you!", and other tracks. In most of the videos, the bright green vegetable soft toy stood out against the teen's all-black outfit, which featured her favorite Balenciaga City bag style, high-top sneakers, a black pleated leather miniskirt, and a hooded, cropped black puffer jacket. (The AC must have been blasting because this is definitely not a summer-appropriate 'fit!)
North West completed her look with semi-see-through shield-style red sunglasses and a glossy ombré lip featuring stark brown liner and pink center. She finished off her glam, wearing her trademark blue hair, which she also shared with Miku, styled straight with long, clean bangs that hid her forehead and eyebrows.
With this reference (and this reminder to eat and wear your greens), North West further cements her status as one of the leading voices in alt style—and it makes all the sense given the type of music she released on her self-produced debut EP, N0rth4evr. In fact, she actually namechecks Miku in the lyrics for the project's fifth track, “W0ah."
