The sun sets on The Summer I Turned Pretty as series finale leaves fans (mostly) satisfied

This article contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty.

It was the summer that everyone was talking about The Summer I Turned Pretty — and now, it's over.

The beloved and popular romantic drama series came to an end on Wednesday, when the last episode was released on Amazon Prime Video.

The TV series, based on author and showrunner Jenny Han's bestselling novel trilogy, centres around Isabel "Belly" Conklin (played by Lola Tung), and brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno). As teenagers and family friends come of age in a fictional summer resort town called Cousins Beach, a love triangle forms between Belly and the brothers.

The third and final season that just wrapped follows Belly, now finishing up college, in her move to France in the latter episodes after breaking off her engagement with Jeremiah — and still wrestling with her feelings for both brothers.

And — spoiler alert — Team Conrad fans came away from the finale happy, as Belly chose the younger brother in a dramatic sprint through a train station to profess her love.

Her declaration of love has spread far and wide on social media, as fans who were cheering for the two to end up together declare victory.

One X user quoted Belly's pledge of love to Conrad and posted a clip of the scene, adding "WE WON WAR IS OVER."

Another posted a clip of the final scene, in which the couple are pictured happy together, with ABBA's The Winner Takes It All playing overtop.

Others posted their genuine, real-time reactions, jumping off of their couches and screaming in joy at the TV.

The bulk of the fans seem to be in Conrad's camp, with the hashtag #TeamConrad having more than 491,000 posts under it on TikTok, while #TeamJeremiah has garnered just over 163,000 posts.

Still, some fans were upset that the final couple didn't get more time together in the last season to enjoy their love — especially that there were no scenes of a wedding or even of them dating.

A comfort phenomenon

The series became a cross-generational phenomenon this season — the first two episodes of Season 3 attracted 25 million viewers within a week of their release, up 40 per cent compared to Season 2's premiere, according to Amazon Prime.

And while it was marketed toward the Gen-Z audience that might have grown up with the books, the show has struck a chord with millennial women in particular, who've enjoyed reminiscing about their own early relationships.

The fandom has spilled into real life: themed dinners, watch parties between friends and even events hosted at bars and restaurants, especially as the finale drew near.

Still, it's not all paradise in Cousins Beach. Earlier this season, a post on the show's official TikTok page asked fans to start "acting normal online," and another X post in July said bullying and harassment wouldn't be tolerated, after some viewers launched criticisms or threats at the real-life actors for the actions of the characters they portray.

Fans have also been quick to point out cheesy writing or unrealistic plot points in the series. That includes the fact that Belly jetted off to France with no Visa or funds, and the all-too-rapid relationship changes, not to mention the idea of her flip-flopping between two brothers she grew up with.

Despite the sometimes unrealistic plot, fans say they get a lot of comfort from escaping real-world problems in the fictional world.

Hints of a spinoff

While this episode is the last of the TV series, the story might not be over just yet. In a message at the end of the show, the creator, showrunner and author signalled there might be some kind of spinoff to come.

Han thanked fans for making the show part of their summers, adding, "Maybe we'll meet again one summer in Cousins. Until then."

Fans latched onto that message, demanding answers from Han or coming forward with their specific desires for a movie based around the final couple's wedding.

Han has left the door open to further stories based in the world of The Summer I Turned Pretty in past interviews. In June, she told Entertainment Weekly she'd be interested in working with the cast members again — "on this, or something else. Who knows what the future holds?"
