Spotify swapped its logo for a discoball to mark a milestone. A backlash ensued online

Who hates a sparkly disco ball? Turns out a vociferous swath of Spotify users do.

The global audio streamer's temporary trade-in of its simple green-and-black mobile app icon for a shimmery 3D mirrorball version has set off a backlash of blistering online outrage since its appearance last week.

Intended as a short-term swap to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary, the move has instead drawn angry criticism from incensed users — an affront akin to enjoying pineapple as a pizza topping or using the word "moist."

Some called the 3D logo ugly or noted that it appeared pixelated, "like it's perpetually downloading." Others urged the sacking of whomever designed it. Meanwhile, one user mused the change "makes me want to uninstall" Spotify.

With time, however, another contingent emerged to blast the critics as "haters" and decry a general design shift to minimalism.

Social account managers of other brands joined the fray, trolling with their own versions of disco ball-inspired logos.

Responding to a user blasting the anniversary logo for "huge readability and brand issues," the company emphasized the change was indeed just temporary.

"It's our birthday so we’re in our party gear, but we'll be back to normal when the lights go down," a spokesperson posted online on Sunday.

"We know glitter is not for everyone," Spotify acknowledged in another post on X.

"Our temp glow up ends soon. Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon returns next week."
