In Barbie, Ryan Gosling’s job was “beach.” Now, in his new film Project Hail Mary, it’s “space.” The science fiction movie from Amazon MGM Studios is officially coming to theaters next spring. Here’s everything we know so far about the film.

What is Project Hail Mary about?

Project Hail Mary is an adaptation of the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir, who also wrote The Martian. The story follows a sixth-grade science teacher-turned-astronaut, Ryland Grace (Gosling), who is reluctantly sent to space to save the world in a project called Hail Mary. The film is co-directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street) and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard (The Martian).

Who is in the cast?

Ryan Gosling leads the film and also serves as a producer. The supporting cast includes Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Liz Kingsman (F1), Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us), and Ken Leung (Industry).

When does Project Hail Mary come out?

It’ll hit theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026.

Is there a trailer yet?

Yes! On June 30, Amazon MGM Studios released the official trailer.

What has Ryan Gosling said about the film?

At CinemaCon in April, Gosling spoke about Project Hail Mary alongside directors Lord and Miller. “[We] fell in love with a book by Andy Weir and then the world did the same,” he said. “It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope and seemed really hard to make and that’s kind of our bag.”

About working with the duo, he added, “[They] have a singular vision which is weird because there’s two of them. They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh cry.”

He also spoke about his character. “He goes on such a journey as you can see, and this is why you go to the movies,” he said. “I’m not just saying it because I’m in it, because I’m a producer on it as well.”
