UK school closures LIVE: Full list of schools closing on Thursday as 40C heatwave hits

The heatwave forecast is set to continue on Thursday and Friday, and the Met Office said it is possible the figure could be “beaten again”.
With hotter temperatures likely many schools remain partially or fully closed.
Thursday is going to be another hot one, but breezes in the South will make it feel slightly cooler.
Temperatures will rise quickly on Thursday morning under strong June sunshine, although an increasingly brisk breeze in the south will make it feel a touch fresher in places

Claire Savory, CEO of The GLA Trust, which runs 11 primary schools across Gloucestershire, called it "unprecedented times" for schools.
She told the BBC that each of the trust’s schools has undertaken risk assessments, with some closing and others staying open, depending on how safe each site is.
The Met Office has declared today (June 24) as the UK’s hottest June day on record, with a provisional high of 35.8C in Wiggonholt, West Sussex.
This came shortly after 35.7C was recorded in Charlwood, Surrey, which itself surpassed the previous high of 35.6C recorded in 1976 and 1957.
The red heat health alert for the South-west has been extended until 11pm on Friday. It came into force on Wednesday and was initially due to end on Thursday evening but has been extended following a risk assessment by the UK Health and Safety Agency and the Met Office.
Hampshire County Council contacted schools with "general advice" on how to keep buildings and students cool. While schools were "not normally expected to close in hot weather", the final decision is up to each individual one.
The Department for Education has said it does not normally advise schools to close during hot weather. The department said: "During hot weather, we don't normally advise schools to close.
"This is because school attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential, and hot weather can usually be managed safely".
Instead, schools are being encouraged to take practical steps to protect pupils from the heat.
Children are also being encouraged to wear loose, light-coloured clothing and spend as much time as possible in shaded areas.
The Department of Health and Social Care also recommends that children avoid vigorous physical activity during very hot weather.
Falkland Primary School in Newbury has told families that pupils are allowed to attend lessons in their PE kits instead of full school uniform.
Sheldon School in Wiltshire is also allowing students to wear full PE kit or school uniform without a tie or jumper.
The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has provided its members with guidance ahead of the scorching temperatures.
Paul Whiteman, the organisation's general secretary, said: "While there is no legal 'upper limit' for temperature in schools, (school leaders) will certainly be doing all they can to mitigate the effects of such high temperatures."
Teachers' union NASUWT previously stated that should heat warnings be upgraded, "school and college employers must ensure that an immediate, additional risk assessment is carried out".
The Trades Union Congress also campaigned for a legal maximum working temperature to be introduced, while the National Education Union says a maximum indoor working temperature of 26C is appropriate.
Smith's Wood Academy in Solihull has confirmed it will remain open during the extreme heat, with temporary measures introduced to protect pupils and staff.
In a social media post, the school said:
"Temporary measures are in place to keep students and staff safe during the current extreme heat."
The academy added that schools are not expected to close unless directed by the Department for Education and said it would continue to monitor conditions.

If sensible precautions are taken, children are unlikely to be seriously affected by hot conditions but teachers, assistants, school nurses and all child carers should look out for signs of heat stress, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Symptoms of heat stress:
-Children may seem out of character or show signs of discomfort and irritability (including those listed below for heat exhaustion).
-These signs will worsen with physical activity.
-For children and young people who use nappies, dark urine or dry nappies may indicate dehydration and the need for more fluids.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include:
-tiredness
-dizziness
-headache
-nausea
-vomiting
-excessive sweating and pale, clammy skin
To cool a child suffering from heat exhaustion:
-move the child to a cool area and encourage them to drink cool water
-cool the child as rapidly as possible, for example, by sponging or spraying the child with cool water and placing cold packs around the neck and armpits, or wrapping the child in a cool, wet sheet and assist cooling with a fan
If you are concerned about symptoms, or they are worsening, seek medical advice by contacting NHS 111.
Heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke and is a medical emergency.
Symptoms of heatstroke may include:
-confusion or lack of co-ordination
-seizures (fits)
-loss of consciousness
-high body temperature – a temperature of or above 40°C (104°F)
-red, hot skin that can be sweaty or dry
-fast heartbeat
-fast shallow breathing
-diarrhoea
If heatstroke is suspected, call 999 and then cool the child down whilst awaiting medical assistance.
If a child loses consciousness, or has a fit:
Place the child in the recovery position. Call 999 immediately and follow their instructions. For more information on heat related illnesses visit the UKHSA’s website.
A primary school in Exeter has been forced to close during the heatwave after losing its water supply.
Bowhill Primary School shut its doors on Wednesday after a lack of running water made it unsafe to remain open, with pupils instead offered remote learning.
In a notice to parents, the school said:
"We have no water – South West Water are aware and are fixing the problem and we hope to reopen tomorrow.
"We have offered remote learning to all children as it is not safe to be open."

More than 1,000 schools across England and Wales are now believed to have been fully or partially closed as the extreme heatwave continues.
The BBC reported that at least 578 schools in England had announced full or partial closures, with the vast majority located in the south of the country where the most severe heat is expected.
On Tuesday, Wales Online reported 306, however the total is now beleived to be around 500.
Taken together, the figures suggest at least 1,078 schools across England and Wales have been affected by the extreme weather.
The Oldershaw School in Wallasey has become the latest school to alter its timetable as temperatures continue to soar across the UK.
In a message to parents, the school said it would close early on Wednesday and Thursday because of the extreme heat.
A spokesperson said:
"After careful consideration, we have made the decision to close the school early on Wednesday 24th June and Thursday 25th June due to the extreme heat."
Pupils will finish at 1.10pm on both days, with families directed to information shared via Arbor and the school's website.
The Met Office has updated its Red Extreme Heat Warning after increasing confidence that exceptionally high temperatures and humidity will affect a wider area than previously forecast.
The warning, which covers 53 local authority areas across England and Wales, remains in force until 11pm on Thursday, with temperatures expected to exceed 37C and potentially reach 38C to 40C in some locations.
A Met Office spokesperson said:
"During the heatwave expected to affect a large part of England and Wales this week, the highlighted area now looks increasingly likely to see a two to three day period where maximum temperatures in the shade exceed 37 Celsius, perhaps rising to 38 to 40 Celsius in some places."

Currently. there is no legal maximum temperature at which schools must close, meaning schools can remain open even during extreme heat.
The Department for Education says schools are not normally advised to close in hot weather, with decisions left to individual headteachers based on local conditions and risk assessments.
If a school remains open, parents are generally expected to send their children in, although schools are encouraged to take measures such as relaxing uniform rules, increasing water breaks and reducing physical activity.
Schools have been told they can relax uniform rules to help pupils stay comfortable during the extreme heat.
In updated guidance, the Department for Education says schools should consider allowing children to wear lighter clothing in hot weather. Pupils are encouraged to wear loose, light-coloured clothing and wide-brimmed sun hats when outdoors.
The guidance also advises schools to encourage children to stay in the shade where possible and use high-factor sunscreen to protect against the sun.
Teachers are additionally advised to allow pupils to remove blazers and jumpers as temperatures continue to soar under the heatwave.

The GMB union has urged schools to take action to protect pupils and staff during the heatwave, warning that nobody should be expected to learn or work in unsafe temperatures.
Stacey Booth, GMB national officer, said schools should take steps once temperatures exceed 30C, including using cooler areas of buildings, reducing physical activity, increasing water breaks and relaxing uniform requirements where appropriate.
She said:
"No pupil or member of staff should be expected to learn or work in unsafe levels of heat."
Ms Booth added that if such measures cannot be implemented, school leaders should consider closing parts of their schools to protect the wellbeing of pupils and staff.
The last time schools were forced to close on a similar scale because of extreme heat was during the record-breaking July 2022 heatwave, when temperatures exceeded 40C for the first time in UK history.
According to education publication Schools Week, at least 104 schools closed for one or more days as temperatures soared, with many others shortening the school day or moving lessons online.
The UK went on to record its highest-ever temperature of 40.3C at Coningsby in Lincolnshire on July 19, 2022.

At least eight schools across Essex have changed the way they are operating on Wednesday, reports EssexLive, as extreme temperatures continue to affect the county.
The schools affected are:
-Anglo European School, Ingatestone – moved to remote learning, with arrangements to be reviewed over the coming days.
-Bardfield Academy, Basildon – closed after other school closures left some staff unable to attend work due to childcare issues.
-Bocking Primary School, Braintree – allowing parents and carers the option of collecting children early as classroom temperatures rise.
-Glenwood School, Benfleet – shortened the school day for the remainder of the week.
-Shenfield High School, Brentwood – closed due to health and safety concerns linked to the red weather warning.
-The Belsteads School, Little Waltham – closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
-Trinity Road Primary School, Chelmsford – introduced early collection arrangements while remaining open for children who need to stay in school.
-Westlands Community Primary School, Chelmsford – adjusted its school day to help pupils and staff cope with the heat.
One school in Hampshire has reportedly recorded temperatures of up to 45C inside its buildings as the heatwave continues.
According to local newspaper The News, Crestwood Community School in Eastleigh said in a closure notification that:
"Our buildings are measuring between 40C and 45C."
In a letter, the school announced it would close to pupils on Wednesday. with headteacher Krista Dawkins describing conditions as "hot and unbearable" and saying the health and wellbeing of students and staff had to be the priority.
The school said a decision on Thursday's arrangements would be confirmed later.
The Met Office has warned that some areas could see even higher temperatures on Thursday as amber and red extreme heat warnings remain in force.
In a social media update, forecasters said a hotter day lies ahead for parts of the country, with temperatures expected to climb further as the heatwave intensifies.
The warning comes as large parts of England and Wales remain under amber and red alerts, with temperatures forecast to approach 40C in some locations.

Teachers' union NASUWT has warned that schools could find it difficult to justify remaining open while a Met Office red weather warning is in force.
Its website reads:
"Red warnings are issued by the Met Office where exceptionally severe weather is forecast and a danger to life exists. Where a red warning is issued, it will be difficult to justify opening a school.
"Members should also not be expected to travel through a red warning area to reach a school outside the red warning without a thorough risk assessment being made."
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has said future school rebuilding and refurbishment projects must ensure buildings are better able to cope with rising temperatures.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Ms Phillipson said the Government recognised the need to make schools more resilient to extreme weather as heatwaves become more common.
She said:
"We do recognise the need to make sure that as we refurbish and rebuild schools across our country, we make sure that they are well placed to cope with some of the fluctuations in temperature that we're seeing."

Temperatures are expected to climb into the high 30s across London today before peaking close to 40C on Thursday, prompting dozens of schools to shut or shorten the school day.

The National Energy System Operator (NESO), which is responsible for operating and balancing country's electricity system has warned that forecasts show "tight margins" on the UK's electricity system on Wednesday evening as the heatwave intensifies.
In a post on X, NESO said the pressure on the network was being driven by "extremely high temperatures" affecting both Great Britain and continental Europe, combined with low wind speeds reducing renewable energy generation.
"Tight margins" means there is less spare electricity capacity available than normal, although the warning does not necessarily mean power cuts are expected.
Our forecasts are showing tight margins on the electricity system for tomorrow evening. This is due to the impact of extremely high temperatures affecting Great Britain and the continent and low wind.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Government said: "As you will be aware, we are receiving warnings of extremely hot weather for the rest of this week.
"We know that children can be especially vulnerable to extreme heat. We would therefore be grateful for your assistance in highlighting this to education and childcare providers to ensure they take the necessary steps to keep children and young people safe, indoors and outdoors.
"Our advice to schools and childcare settings to deal with extreme heat is to avoid vigorous physical activity and to maximise shade, ventilation and hydration. Children should wear loose, light coloured clothing if possible and wear hats and sun cream outdoors.
"You may find it helpful to refer to the Welsh Government’s guidance on opening schools and childcare settings in extreme hot weather. Further downloadable advice is also available from Public Health Wales for the general public and those looking after children.
"Education settings should ensure they are familiar with the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, as well as the steps to take should anyone in their learning community, including those working remotely, show signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Guidance on this can be found in NHS advice. Heat stroke should always be treated as an emergency.
"Please also be alert to the Met Office weather warnings and Air Quality in Wales air pollution forecast."
Archway School in Gloucestershire said it could not “safely manage the expected extreme temperatures across the site”, adding that it was “concerned about the risks of travelling to and from school in these conditions”.

Around 100 schools will also be at least partially closed over the next three days in Buckinghamshire, along with 86 schools in Gloucestershire, according to council data.
Some 100 schools in Somerset will be closed over the next three days, with the vast majority fully closed on Wednesday and Thursday, according to Somerset Council.
Bledlow Ridge School in Buckinghamshire said it was closing as its “classrooms do not have air conditioning, and indoor temperatures are likely to rise significantly above outdoor levels during very hot weather”.
St Michael with St Thomas CE Primary School in Widnes said it would remain closed on Wednesday afternoon due to road closures and high temperatures in classrooms, with windows unable to be opened because of smoke.
Parents were advised to check Arbor in-app messages for further information.

St Mark's C of E School in Southampton closed from 1pm on Tuesday because of the extreme temperatures.
In a social media post, the school said it would remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday before reopening on Friday, with further details shared directly with parents by email.
The Department for Education says schools are not normally advised to close during hot weather, as attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and "hot weather can usually be managed safely".
Schools told to make adjustmentsThe guidance says schools should consider:
-Relaxing uniform rules
-Allowing pupils to remove blazers and jumpers
-Encouraging hats and sunscreen outdoors
-Ensuring children drink more water than usual
-Maximising shade and ventilation
-Avoiding vigorous physical activity and adapting PE lessons
For more advice, visit the government's website.
There are several ways that schools can make changes to keep children safe in hot weather, especially as children are more at risk of becoming ill with heat-related issues than adults.

The Welsh Government has written to education directors at every council in Wales ahead of this week's red extreme heat warning.
In the letter, officials warned that "children can be especially vulnerable to extreme heat" and urged schools and childcare settings to take steps to keep pupils safe, including maximising shade, ventilation and hydration, avoiding vigorous physical activity and ensuring children wear hats and sun cream outdoors.
The number of schools planning full or partial closures because of the extreme heat has risen to at least 312, according to the BBC.
Education reporter Nathan Standley said a further 64 schools had been identified since an earlier update, taking the total number of affected schools to 312.
The vast majority are located in southern England, where a Met Office red extreme heat warning will be in force from 9am on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday. West Berkshire has reported 38 affected schools, while there are 19 in Oxfordshire and 15 in Hampshire. Bridgend County Borough Council in south Wales has also said two schools will close early on Wednesday.
However, the true number is likely to be considerably higher. The BBC noted that many councils do not publish lists of schools forced to close because of extreme weather and there is no central database recording closures. In addition, many schools are part of multi-academy trusts and may not appear on local authority closure lists.
Network Rail has warned passengers to check before travelling and to only make journeys that are "absolutely necessary" on Wednesday and Thursday if travelling to, from or within areas covered by the red extreme heat warning. The rail operator also advised people to carry water, avoid boarding trains if they feel unwell and to check for the latest travel information before setting off.

Charles Darwin School in Bromley has asked parents and carers to read an email sent out detailing arrangements for pupils on Wednesday and Thursday amid the extreme heat. In a post on X, the school also reminded families that it will be closed on Friday for an inset day.

A school in Swindon will close for two days this week after the Met Office issued a Red Warning for Extreme Heat.
The Dorcan Academy said all learning will take place remotely on Wednesday and Thursday following a risk assessment.
Students will attend lessons one to three on Tuesday before finishing on-site learning at 11.30am. Lessons four and five will then be completed remotely via EPraise.
In a message to parents, the school said the decision reflected "the age and design of our building, including multiple south and south-west-facing classrooms, which would be unsuitable during the forecast extreme temperatures."

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) said it has written to all its members with guidance on dealing with the heat this week, including the impact on pupils and staff, legal positions and when to consider closure.
Paul Whiteman, NAHT general secretary, said:
“While there is no legal ‘upper limit’ for temperature in schools, (school leaders) will certainly be doing all they can to mitigate the effects of such high temperatures.”

"Due to the Red Extreme Heat Warning in place and following careful consideration of official advice and a comprehensive risk assessment, our schools will be closed on Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June 2026.
"The health, safety and wellbeing of our pupils, staff and wider school community remain our highest priority.
"We will be sharing details directly with families regarding learning activities and work to be completed during the closure period.
"Thank you for your understanding and support. Please stay safe, keep hydrated and take care in the extreme heat."
New Inn Primary School, Pontypool, will close on Wednesday and Thursday due to the Red Extreme Heat Warning for South Wales.
Headteacher K. Prendergast said rising classroom temperatures, limited shade and concerns over travel in extreme heat were key reasons behind the decision.
