Social media ban for under 15s in Denmark
In a written statement made by the Danish Ministry of Digital Affairs, it was stated that an agreement was reached to impose an age limit on social media use upon the Ministry's proposal and with the approval of the government and political parties.
The statement noted that Denmark has taken an important step by introducing an age limit for social media use, and that this step aims to protect children and young people from the negative aspects of the digital world.
The statement noted that the lower age limit for social media use was set at 15. "Children under the age of 15 should not be able to access platforms that could expose them to harmful content. Exceptions can be made if parents feel their children should have access earlier. This will be achieved by giving parents the opportunity to consent to access from the age of 13," it said.
In this way, children will have more opportunities to focus on different areas for their own development, the statement said, adding that "digital guardians" will be established and inspections will become more frequent within the scope of the decision.
Digital Affairs Minister Caroline Stage also noted: "With the agreement reached, we are setting a clear direction. Denmark will lead the way in Europe in a joint effort to strengthen the digital well-being of children and young people by introducing an age limit for social media."
