Things have gone cold! Handshake crisis between DEM Party and HUDA-PAR

Parliamentary Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş became the first speaker to visit the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality in 26 years. The visit, which took place under DEM Party control, was also attended by several members of the parliamentary commission established for the "new process."

One of the names in the delegation was Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu, Chairman of HUDA-PAR and Istanbul Deputy, who has served as a lawyer in cases against the terrorist organization Hezbollah.

THE PLACE HAS FROST

The visit took place amidst the long-standing political tension between the DEM Party and HUDA-PAR. During the meeting at the city hall, the distanced attitude of DEM Party metropolitan co-mayors Serra Bucak and Doğan Hatun toward Yapıcıoğlu was striking.

DEM PARTY CHAIRMEN DID NOT SHAKE THE HAND OF THE HUDA-PAR LEADER In the footage of the closed-door meeting, Co-Chair Serra Bucak was seen saying “Welcome” to Zekeriya Yapıcıoğlu without extending her hand, while Yapıcıoğlu greeted Bucak by placing his hand on his chest.

Co-chair Doğan Hatun was caught on camera looking away and not shaking hands with Yapıcıoğlu when he approached her. Hatun's handshake with the AKP MPs drew attention.

"HISTORIC MOMENT"

Social media accounts close to HUDA-PAR described these moments as "historic moments." Yapıcıoğlu also visited the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality for the first time. Comments indicated that the tension between the two parties persisted and that the visit had not changed this situation.
