Earthquakes in Balıkesir Sındırgı caused alarm: Professor Üşümezsoy issues important aftershock statement

The Sındırgı district of Balıkesir has been attracting attention with a series of earthquakes in recent days. The area, which was previously in the news for a 6.1 magnitude tremor, has now experienced three separate earthquakes measuring 4.8, 4.3, and 4.2 magnitudes. The tremors were felt in Istanbul and surrounding provinces.

In his first statement regarding the earthquakes, seismologist Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy warned citizens not to panic. Speaking on a live Habertürk broadcast, Üşümezsoy said:

“Even though aftershocks continue after the earthquake in Sındırgı, this is natural and does not mean that there will be a new major earthquake.

However, the Simav fault zone carries the potential for major earthquakes in the long term due to its geological structure.”
