Warning from skin specialist: Cancer risk in one session

Dermatology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ali Balevi drew attention to the negative effects of solarium on skin health , emphasizing that especially fair-skinned individuals, those with tattoos and those under the age of 18 should stay away from this application. Balevi stated that the ultraviolet A (UVA) and B (UVB) rays used in solarium devices disrupt the collagen structure in the skin, cause premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. He also reminded that solarium was defined as a carcinogenic substance by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2009.
SOLARIUM USE OPENS THE DOOR TO CANCER!Current research shows that even just one tanning session can increase the risk of malignant melanoma by up to 75 percent. Prof. Dr. Balevi said that unnoticed skin cancer cells can become active with tanning and that serious health risks should not be taken for the sake of a tanned appearance. In individuals with a genetic predisposition, tanning bed use can accelerate cancer development even more. Prof. Dr. Balevi recommended that natural tanning methods be preferred instead of tanning beds, and drew attention to the importance of controlled sun exposure and the use of protective products for healthy skin. He stated that treatments that include UV light, such as phototherapy, should only be applied under the supervision of a doctor and in the treatment of certain diseases.
