Özer is before the judge for the second time
Witness statements are being taken in the trial of Ahmet Özer, who was suspended from his post as Esenyurt Mayor after being arrested in Istanbul on charges of "being a member of the armed terrorist organization PKK/KCK," and is facing a prison sentence of 7 years, 6 months to 15 years.
According to the news in AA, the defendant Özer, who is in custody, was brought to the hearing held by the Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court in the hall opposite the Marmara Prison.
The hearing was also attended by CHP Deputy Group Chair Gökhan Günaydın, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan, CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik, Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu and some party members.
The hearing continues with witness statements being taken.
The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office states that the terrorist organization requires two fundamental sources of continuity: human resources and financial support to maintain its existence and realize its fundamental goal of so-called "democratic autonomy." The indictment highlights that military operations aimed at neutralizing organization members and other methods, such as the establishment of trustees, have thwarted the provision of financial support to the organization from municipal budgets. It also emphasizes that the organization has been forced to develop new strategies.
The indictment, citing HTS records from the wiretapping of suspect Özer, states that 135 criminal elements were found in conversations between November 23, 2023, and January 23, 2024. The indictment states that a secret witness named "Hermes" testified that Özer met with Cemal Kavak, a high-ranking member of the organization's European branch, at a house in Esenler and requested assistance in smuggling a relative of his who had been sentenced for terrorist activities. It also notes that during a video call with Zübeyir Aydar, the organization's alleged current KCK Executive Council member, Kavak introduced Özer as "a valuable friend of mine, one of us. He actively carries out our work." The anonymous witness's testimony states that after the video call, Kavak told Özer that the young people in the safe houses who would participate in rural activities were in financial need and asked for money. The suspect, Özer, also said he had business acquaintances and would contribute. The anonymous witness testified that Özer came to Kavak's house a few days later and handed him a large sum of money. In his testimony, he explained that he was one of those who personally counted the money, equivalent to approximately five years' worth of minimum wage.
The secret witness reported that this money was used to send approximately 10 members of the organization to rural areas, each via Lice, Van, and Nusaybin, Mardin. A portion of this money was provided to the organization members to meet their transportation and shelter needs. The indictment emphasized that Ahmet Özer was transferred and assigned to Esenyurt Municipality from municipalities in western provinces as part of the "urban reconciliation" strategy announced by senior leaders of the PKK/KCK armed terrorist organization, taking advantage of the current political climate to conceal his true political views and image. It also indicated that Özer's political stance and behavior were shaped according to the instructions of senior organization leaders.
The Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) report included in the indictment also notes that Özer received and sent various amounts of money to individuals facing charges of "membership in an armed terrorist organization" and "propaganda for a terrorist organization." The report also states that on March 29, 2024, Özer's account received 1,289,480 lira at the exchange rate at the time, with the transaction description "deposited on the instructions of Muhammed Sertaç Özçoban," but with an unknown recipient, and the transaction was effectively deposited. The indictment alleges that Özer became a member of an armed terrorist organization by establishing organic ties to the organization in a way that demonstrates continuity, diversity, and intensity. It seeks a prison sentence of 7 years, 6 months, to 15 years for "membership in an armed terrorist organization."
