Adem Gül, a July 15 veteran who serves as the chief clerk at the Ankara Courthouse's 2nd High Criminal Court, took to the streets to defend democracy during FETÖ 's July 15, 2016, coup attempt. Coming to the General Staff Headquarters with his brother, Gül was wounded in his right and left arms, wrist, and finger by the putschists' gunfire. Gül, who lost his right little finger after four surgeries, regained his health. However, due to the risk of surgery, the shrapnel in his arm could not be removed. Gül, a July 15 veteran , has been living with eight shrapnel pieces in his body for nine years.

"WE TOOK THE STREETS WITHOUT ANY HESITATION"

Gazi Adem Gül stated that when the events began on the night of the coup, he and his friends, who had just left the mosque, were sitting in the courtyard. Initially, they couldn't figure out why the planes were flying low. However, when they returned home, they realized it was a coup attempt after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's statements on television. Gül explained that he acted without hesitation after the call, saying, "That night, my brother and I performed our ablutions and left our house to do whatever we could to prevent the coup. Actually, our first goal was to reach the social complex. But the traffic had become so chaotic. We drove towards Kızılay. When our car stopped moving in the Kızılay center, near the Çankaya Municipality building, we parked there. Then we arrived at the Kızılay Shopping Center, where citizens had gathered. That's when we saw the tanks coming at us with a vengeance."

'THEY FIRED ARMOR-PIERCING CANNON BULLETS AT US'

Adem Gül stated that during the coup attempt, people held flags in protest, but when the salutes were recited, they began to move as if fear had been removed from their hearts. He said, "As we approached the General Staff Headquarters, they began firing at us from the roof and windows. We lay down on the ground, under police vehicles, to protect ourselves from the fire. When the firing stopped and we got up, two helicopters began flying above us. These helicopters, as we later learned in the case files and during the hearings, fired armor-piercing artillery shells at us. Just think: we had no weapons, our goal was to protect our homeland, to stop the coup attempt, and yet, seeing that we had a flag, they fired armor-piercing shells at us. I was injured there by shrapnel."

'I LOST MY ABILITY TO WRITE FAST'

Gül, who stated that he had 8 shrapnel pieces in his body but that these points could not be treated because they caused tissue loss, said, "That's why none of the shrapnel pieces on my left side could be removed. I am currently the chief clerk at the Ankara Courthouse. I was previously a court clerk. As you know, the job of a court clerk is to type with all 10 fingers without looking. With this finger in this condition, I lost the ability to type quickly. Therefore, I encountered many difficulties later in the profession I loved. Thankfully, our superiors and chiefs at the time assigned us to positions that were a little more suitable. But of course, it is a little sad when a person cannot do their own job. But still, may the motherland endure. In the end, the traitors did not achieve their goals. Our motherland will endure, God willing. This motherland has never been in an easy geography. We will do our best to keep our motherland and our flag flying in a sacred way until our last breath. May God never let another tragedy like July 15th happen to this country again."
