'Intensive use of technological devices causes the 'techno neck' problem'

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hamza Sucuoğlu stated that structural disorders occur in the neck muscles as a result of using devices such as mobile phones, tablets and computers in the wrong position for a long time, and that this situation has become widespread especially in the pediatric age group.
'IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY COMMON IN YOUTH AND CHILDREN'Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sucuoğlu, who said that the increase in the use of technological devices such as mobile phones, tablets and computers increases the frequency of the disease, said, “While the load on the neck in the normal head position is 4-5 kilos, this load can increase to 25-30 kilos in the forward-leaning position. This situation can disrupt the structure of the discs between the vertebrae and lead to hernias.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sucuoğlu, who stated that pocket neck disease used to be seen more in the adult age group, said, “In recent years, with the widespread use of technological devices in children and young people, we have started to encounter it frequently in this age group. Especially after the age of 4-5, children using tablets and phones for long periods of time pose a serious threat to neck health.”
'RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROTECTION FROM POCKET NECK DISEASE'Mentioning the precautions that should be taken to prevent techno neck disease, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sucuoğlu suggested the following:
“Reduce the time you use your phone or tablet. It is important to prevent prolonged use habits, especially in children and young people. Keep devices at eye level. If possible, using devices at eye level will reduce neck curvature. Take regular breaks. It is necessary to take short breaks at least every 30 minutes while using devices. Do neck exercises. Stretching and relaxation exercises that strengthen neck muscles should be done regularly. Develop correct posture habits. Ergonomic arrangements should be made to prevent the neck and head from remaining in a forward-leaning position.”
'WARNING TO FAMILIES AND TEACHERS'Emphasizing the role of families and teachers in preventing pocket neck disease, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sucuoğlu said, “Families should supervise their children’s use of technology and limit the time. Teachers in schools should also teach students the habits of sitting correctly and using devices.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sucuoğlu stated that pocket neck disease can lead to cervical disc herniation, spinal curvatures and posture disorders if left untreated, and said, “This disease is not limited to neck pain but can also cause hunchback, neck straightening and spinal deformities. Therefore, early intervention is of great importance.”
