During the quarterfinal meeting between the Washington Capitals and Carolina, Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin became the victim of an accidental hit from another player.
During an episode near the boards, opposing defenseman Brent Burns, swinging his stick, hit Ovechkin's face, who was behind him. However, the referees did not see any violation of the rules in his actions, Sport24 reports.
Ovechkin fell to the ice after the Canadian's hit, but soon got up and went to the bench, where he put a towel to his face, which later showed traces of blood. Despite the incident, Ovechkin returned to the ice and continued the game.
This match was Alexander's 159th in his career in the Stanley Cup playoffs. In the current playoffs, he has already scored four goals and one assist in the first round games.
