Rockstar Games has officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, setting the new date for November 19, 2026. The announcement was published on the social network X; in it, the developer apologizes to fans and explains the reason for the delay:
“We apologize for the delay in an already long wait, but these additional months will allow us to finish the game to the level of excellence you expect and deserve,” the statement read.
The game was originally scheduled for release on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. A PC version has not been officially confirmed.
Rockstar did not disclose a detailed reason for the delay beyond general statements about the need for additional time to bring the project up to expected quality.
In early November, media reports surfaced that the company had laid off at least thirty employees. According to sources, the dismissals were allegedly related to the workers' attempts to form a union: all those fired were allegedly affiliated with the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and had participated in the union's closed Discord server.
Publisher Take-Two attributed the staff cuts to "gross violations," while those fired and their supporters linked the layoffs to union activism. Several developers commented on the situation to Bloomberg; the details of their comments were not included in the general announcement of the date change.
