In Britain, Russian citizens are not yet being harassed under the new foreign influence law. At least, no such complaints have been received, according to Russian Ambassador to London Andrei Kelin, according to RIA Novosti.
"There have been no reports of harassment of our fellow citizens in connection with the new legislation so far. However, we are closely monitoring this and reserve the right to retaliate. The details of our response will depend on how the British authorities implement the new mechanism," the diplomat noted.
New rules for registering foreigners in the UK were introduced on July 1. They will come into full force on October 1 of this year. Until then, a so-called grace period applies.
Under the new scheme, foreigners must declare their activities in the Kingdom if they are conducted under agreements with other countries. Two levels are envisaged. The first covers all countries, while the second covers Russia and Iran.
These two countries pose a threat to Britain's national security, according to the law's authors. If Russians fail to declare their activities promptly, they could face up to five years in prison.
