French President Emmanuel Macron has commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to begin direct negotiations with Ukraine . His words are quoted by AFP.
Macron called the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine a first but insufficient step to resolve the conflict. According to the French leader, Putin is allegedly looking for a way out, but he still wants to buy time."
"An unconditional ceasefire must not be preceded by negotiations," the French leader said.
Earlier, Putin proposed that Ukraine resume direct talks on May 15 in Istanbul . He stressed that this was a dialogue without preconditions. The Russian leader added that the parties could meet in Istanbul, where talks "were held earlier and where they were interrupted."
